CLAUDIA PLOSCHAK February 6, 1923 - December 1, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Claudia Ploschak at the age of 91 years. Claudia was born in the town of Monastyryska, Ukraine and was the youngest of five children. Upon completing her schooling, she worked as a Pharmacy Assistant. She married Stephan (Steve) in 1946 in Germany. Together they endured many hardships during the Second World War. They were married for 56 years until Steve's passing in 2002. When the war ended they were amongst many refugees who no longer had a home and lived in a DP (Displaced Persons) camp in Germany for a few years. With the help of family in Canada, they immigrated here in 1948. They embraced their new homeland, working very hard to make a comfortable life for their family. It was indeed a very proud day for them when they both became Canadian citizens. Claudia and Steve made their home near Rorketon, MB where they farmed for over 40 years. There they raised two daughters, sadly losing their oldest, Sonia at the age of 13. After retiring from farming they moved to Winnipeg in 1990 to be closer to family. Claudia loved to cook and bake and produced many great feasts for family and friends to enjoy. She was also an amazing gardener who had the uncanny ability to make almost anything grow. Claudia had a very strong faith which carried her through many difficult times in her life. We were so fortunate to have Claudia in our lives for 91 years. Despite all the health challenges she faced she remained a constant inspiration to us all and left us with many treasured memories. Left to cherish those memories are her daughter Iris, granddaughter Jennifer (Simon) and her precious great-granddaughter, Sienna who was born a month ago. Claudia prayed every day that she would live long enough to be able to meet her little great-granddaughter. Her prayers were answered as she did get to experience that great joy. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Misericordia Place for their care and compassion over the last seven years. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 5 at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue with Fr. Darren Kawiuk officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Claudia's memory to The Arthritis Society, 105-386 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3R6.
