ROBERT HENRI DOUCHANT Peacefully on November 30, 2014, Robert (Bob) Douchant passed away at Tache Centre at the age of 87 years. Robert leaves to mourn his passing, children Michel (Oksana) Douchant, Alain (Margaret) Douchant, Daniel Douchant, Christian (Anita) Douchant, sister Denise in Belgium, nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews in Belgium. He was predeceased by his former wife, Santina, his parents, René and Irma (nee Strubbe) Douchant, sisters, Suzanne and Hélène. Robert was born in Anderlecht, Belgium in 1927. The only son in a family of four, he had three sisters whom he adored. He grew up during the 1930s and 1940s when Belgium was recovering from the First World War, the Depression and the subsequent German Occupation of the Second World War. Robert never forgot how impoverished he and his family were during those difficult times. Between the ages of 18 to 21, he enlisted in the Belgium Army and trained with the Second Commando Regiment. In November 1952, when Robert was 25, he enlisted for service in Korea as part of the UN Force contribution. When he was 30, he met and married Santina Ferrari in 1957 and then in 1960, immigrated with their young son to St. Boniface and raised three more boys. To support his growing family, Robert apprenticed as a plumber to work as a unionized plumber-pipefitter (Local 254) and travelled throughout Canada for work. However, in 1970 Robert and Santina went their separate ways. Robert was a very gregarious and talkative person, he loved expounding on political views and many discussions were held on various subjects. He had a true passion for inventions and was always tinkering in his work area. Robert had numerous friends at the Legions and was also much involved with the Belgium Club. He kept in constant contact with his friends and relatives in Belgium and travelled there regularly. As life's pace became more difficult for Robert to maintain, he expressed himself by painting; a talent he inherited from his mother. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. Many heartfelt thanks to the staff at Actionmarguerite-Tache Care Home for their support in Robert's care. Viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 8, 2014 with funeral service to follow at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Cremation to follow. Private family interment will take place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Belgium Veterans Association. • I am sorry to hear of the passing of Robert. We had several telephone conversation years ago about his family history with the Douchant name. Just over a phone call I considered him a very interesting person. - Posted by: Gary Douchant () on: Dec 06, 2014

  • I met and knew Robert over the years, through my sister Enid Kaake and always when in Winnipeg we frequently met or visited with Robert at his home or the Legion. I found him a very knowledgeable, interesting, kind man and shall miss our visits when I next return to Winnipeg, although I know that Enid will miss his companionship tremendously since they go back a very long way in time! - Posted by: Selma Cooper (Friend through my sister Enid Kaake) on: Dec 06, 2014
