Cpl Smyth was always a kind and generous man. Always in the smoke pit at the hangar striking conversation and always willing to give advice or knowledge he had obtained over his many years. It was with a heavy heart that I learned of his illness and passing. RIP Cpl Smyth 402 will be one star less bright without you. - Posted by: Brad Freeman-Pohl (Served with Cpl Smyth 402 Sqn 2012-2014) on: Dec 10, 2014

Those of us who are lucky, or deserving, earn the friendship of someone unique. The individual who is too big to be hammered into a round or square hole. A perfect epitaph for Rob Smyth would be "I gave everything for my country, but my soul! The military was his life, I worried when I had to present him to my CO after I received my commission, Rob, got it exactly right, coming to attention, and making a proper introduction.I was damn proud to have him as a friend that day. I served with Rob at 402 Sqn for ten years and he never was cheap with a smile or kept his knowledge and experience to himself. He could be gruff when it was needed but when you walked way and looked at the bruise you knew he meant well. We went to Remedial Physical Training "PT" together when we both failed our "Express Test". I pushed him on this because I wanted him to succeed and he completed it, even though it was a painful experience for both of us. We could have walked the 15 minutes to the gym, but Rob insisted on driving,..he smoked on the drive to building 90, gave everything he had in 55 min of PT and then smoked on the drive back to work. I lectured him on the importance of his health and he said, "hey,..I smoke!" You can't argue with a peg too big too fit in a round or square hole. I'm angry with him that he was so careless with the affection we had for him, but that was Rob. It was an honor and privilege to have known and served with him - Posted by: Mike Clarke (Served with Cpl Smyth 402 Sqn 1998-2008) on: Dec 07, 2014
