STANLEY RONALD HATCHER 1932 - 2014 Sadly we announce the passing of Stan, surrounded by his family, on November 30, in his 83rd year. Beloved husband of Gladys, his sweetheart and partner for over 59 years. Loving father to Adrian (Rosemary), Kevin (Lee), Michael (Kathy) and David (Sheri) and grandchildren David, Benjamin, Lindsay, Heidi, Stephanie, Christopher, Ryan, Austin, Michael and Allison. He will also be sadly missed by his sister-in-law Frances and his eight great- grandchildren. Stan went to Bishop Wordsworth's in Salisbury and graduated with his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Birmingham University, followed by his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1958. He joined Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, first as a research engineer in Chalk River, then at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment in Pinawa, Manitoba, rising to President of AECL Research in 1986 and President and CEO of AECL in 1989. After retiring in 1992, he was a consultant and a Founding Director of Energy Strategists Consultancy Limited in Washington, DC. He served as President of the Pacific Nuclear Council in 1994 - 1996, and President of the American Nuclear Society in 1997- 1998, being one of only two non-Americans ever to hold that office. He was acclaimed internationally for his work, and in 2010 received the prestigious Global Award from the International Nuclear Societies Council. He was a Professional Engineer of Ontario and held the Ian McRae Award from the Canadian Nuclear Association. Stan was an active member of St. Alban's Anglican Church, serving as warden for several years, and singing with the choir. In 2005 he received the Bishop's Order of Niagara for exceptional service. Family was always very important to him. Some of the fondest times he spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were playing, camping, canoeing, and travelling. A funeral service will be held at St. Alban's Church, 537 Main Street, Glen Williams, on Monday, December 8 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society www.cancer.ca or to St. Alban's Church www.saintalban.ca.
