DOUGLAS ALEXANDER BROPHY April 14, 1952 - December 5, 2014 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Douglas Alexander Brophy, at home, on Friday, December 5, 2014. Left to lovingly remember Doug are Carol, his beloved wife and best friend of 43 years; cherished daughters, Kristin (Mark) and Leah (Chuck), and granddaughter Emily (Kristin). He will be much missed by sisters-in-law, Judy (Mike) and Susanne (Gordon) of Ottawa. He leaves behind his nephews, Christopher (Andrea) and Ryan (Kari), and great-nephew, Liam (Christopher/Andrea); as well as many aunts and uncles. Doug was predeceased by his dad, Alexander James on September 5, 1966, and his mom, Viola Grace on December 1, 2008. Doug was born and raised in west end Winnipeg, the only child of Alex and Vi Brophy. He attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate (occasionally), chummed with his muscle-car friends and played and coached hockey at the Orioles Community Club. In later years he coached ringette at the Westdale Community Centre. In the summer of 1966 Doug stole Carol's heart while working as a dashing gas jockey at the Redboine Boating Club. At 18 he began his career at the Department of Highways as a mail boy. He remained with the Department of Highways for 35 years, retiring at 55 as a Policy Analyst. Not content to retire fully, Doug launched BRO Consulting Ltd. and worked with organic products for anti/de-icing on roads throughout Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. He loved running this venture from his home office and being actively engaged over the years with a host of wonderful business associates. Doug enjoyed spending quality time with his retirement buds: Bob, Ray and Ron. Their "meetings" resulted in many hours of laughter and storytelling! Many years were enjoyed by Doug and Carol as members of the Redboine Boating Club on Churchill Drive. He served on the Board of Directors as Vice Commodore. When water levels changed dramatically on the Red River they chose Gimli Harbour as their next home port for many good times with family and friends. As members of Fort Whyte Centre Carol and Doug enjoyed many lunches and leisurely outdoor rambles. Winter-time travels took them to the British Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Barbados and Jamaica for much fun in the sun. For many years Doug enjoyed duck hunting with friends and in later years his love of the outdoors had him replacing his gun with his camera. He delighted in "helping" Carol with summer garden activities. He was a great assistant albeit overly enthusiastic with chain-saw pruning!! Doug was a unique and gentle man. With his warm and winning ways he made everyone feel special. He valued family and friends above all. He was fiercely proud always of his wife's and daughters' accomplishments and their steadfast devotion to strong family values. In compliance with Doug's wishes, there will not be a Funeral Service. Thank you to Bob and Lori Lees, to the City of Winnipeg Paramedics and to the Winnipeg Police Department for their very capable and caring assistance. Should you desire, memorial donations to a children's charity of your choice would be appreciated. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204-897-4665, is in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com Sweetheart, I will miss my oranges and morning cookie shaped in a happy face on top of the morning paper to take to work. I will miss especially your face in the window, waving and throwing a kiss to me each morning as I set off for the office. I will miss the beautiful flower bouquets you brought to me at work just because'. I love you. Your passing leaves a huge void in our lives. We will love and miss you forever.

Carol....Dave and I were so sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Doug. As a part of the "Alder Bay Gang", we grew up with the sense of "community-style family" which included you and Doug. His sense of humour and "glowing tan" will be forever remembered. You and Doug were such great friends with my mom and dad and I know they enjoyed all the time you spent together. Doug and Mom are likely having a drink together. It wasn't that long ago when I saw you in a downtown grocery store and we did a quick "catch up". It reminds us that life can change in a heart beat. You and girls are in our prayers and may God bless you all during this most difficult and unexpected time. Our sincerest condolences!
