My memories of Bernice go back to late '80s when Laura and I were first going out and I, as a 30 year-old, ended up feeling like a teenager because I had to go and "meet the parents" for the first time. Despite Laura's stories about previous boyfriends' grilling by her parents and Ben and Bernice's initial reserve, I was soon made to feel welcome by Bernice's kindness and generosity of spirit. I will always treasure memories of visits to Rainy River, both summer and winter, when I was welcomed fully into the family activities while simultaneously being given the space to enjoy the great outdoors and time to sit in the swing and contemplate the river. Bernice had the knack of knowing when to draw you in and when to leave you to yourself. I will also always remember how happy we were to have Bernice and Ben around in Halifax at Christmas 1990 when, after a previous false alarm, Laura and I had to decide whether to make the trip to the Grace Hospital because she seemed to be in labour. Bernice's experience and counsel helped to calm us down and, indeed, get in the car in time to make the trip. Plse accept sincere condolences from me and Trudy in your time of sorrow, Sincerely, Jeff - Posted by: Jeff Lamb () on: Dec 12, 2014
