He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia; his son Tim and wife Fatima; his daughter Sarah and partner Diane; granddaughters Natasha and Jena and Jena's husband Corrado, and great-grandchildren Nico and Luca. He will also be sadly missed by his many colleagues and friends. He grew up in Oxford, Ohio, and served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946. He attended Miami University. Following graduation, he attended Purdue University where he received a PhD in Clinical Psychology. He received two years further training as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Menninger Clinic. Robert taught psychology at the University of South Dakota and at the University of Colorado Medical School before coming to the University of Manitoba to become the head of the section of Behavioral Science at the Department of Psychiatry. Here he initiated a pioneering Internship Program in Clinical Psychology and took pride in his collaboration with outstanding colleagues. He enjoyed clinical work and supervision, but considered himself primarily a teacher. After retirement he remained as Professor and Senior Scholar in the Department of Clinical Health Psychology in the Medical School. Robert was active in his profession and served as President of the Psychological Association of Manitoba, Honorary President of the Canadian Psychological Association, and President of the Association of Medical School Professors of Psychology. Volunteering was an important part of his life and he worked with Winnipeg Harvest. On the national level he served as President of the Canadian Mental Health Association where he worked to establish partnerships between the Canadian association and mental health associations in sub-Saharan Africa. He served as Senior Consultant to the Canadian International Development Agency and as temporary advisor to the World Health Organization. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Canadian Psychological Association for Distinguished Lifetime Contributions to Canadian Psychology, June 2013. Bob enjoyed the love and support of his dear wife and family. Tim and Sarah were a steady source of pride and pleasure and he took special satisfaction in their involvement and contribution to society. He cherished the many happy times with his family and friends at their cottage on Pistol Lake, Minaki, Ontario. He and his wife enjoyed Winnipeg's rich cultural life, as well as travel overseas. A memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent on Saturday, December 13 at 3:30 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff of the Movement Disorders Centre, Deer Lodge Hospital and the staff at Riverview Health Centre for their caring support for Robert during his struggle with Parkinson's disease over the past three years. We are also grateful for the companionship and comfort provided by his many friends. We were saddened to hear of Bob's passing from Larry at Minaki. Bob was a good lake neighbour and friend. The yearly pig roasts cohosted by Bob, Gini, and a few others were great fun for all the lake residents. The huge bowl of fresh strawberries was always a hit. His efforts and ready conversation are greatly missed. Winter and summer gatherings are not the same without him. Our condolences to Gini, Tim and Fatima. - Posted by: George and Jean Hanson (Friends from Minaki) on: Dec 18, 2014

From the very beginning of my membership in the Unitarian Church, I became aware of how much strength Bob brought to individuals and to the congregation as a whole. When we were first developing a Pastoral Care philosophy for our congregation, Bob was a wonderful resource. He helped us to consider our own values and the values of our faith and what that meant for the ways we could reach out to provide support to members of our congregation. I both respected him and enjoyed being with him on Sunday mornings. - Posted by: Norma Drosdowech (Member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg) on: Dec 12, 2014
