IRENE KURTZ (nee VOGT) February 6, 1932 - December 6, 2014 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Kurtz on December 6, 2014, two months shy of her 83rd birthday. She was born in Odessa, Ukraine and was predeceased by her father, mother, two sisters and one brother. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William, daughter Marie-Louise (Dave), son William (Kris) and daughter Elizabeth. Most importantly, by the loves of her life, her grandchildren, Max and Yerusalem. Having left Germany with her mother, she arrived in Canada in February 1950. She married William in 1956 and together they built a masonry business, raising their children with every opportunity available to them. She was a life long learner, instilled in her children curiosity and believed that the world was our classroom. She worked tirelessly in the home, business, garden, and cottage and true to her entrepreneurial spirit, opened a travel agency. She was always cooking, baking, knitting, canning and when given a moment, reading. Her quest for knowledge was insatiable. Her greatest joy was her family and particularly, her grandchildren, who were/are all of our favourite topic of conversation. Our mom was a kind and compassionate person who never forgot her impoverished childhood and even the last day of life, reminded us to send the soccer balls and malaria nets to the kids in the Lutheran World Relief catalogue. She was our biggest fan, we will miss her incredible dry wit and intelligence. The strength she demonstrated throughout her life, especially during these last years is immeasurable. Our family would like to thank all the nurses, staff and nephrologists at Sherbrooke dialysis and all the wonderful people we met over the years who require dialysis. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Our deepest condolences to you all for the passing of your Wife and Mother. Aunt Irene played a major part in my childhood. I loved the weekends our families spent together at the lake. Mare, Will, and Liz were my best friends growing up; and the only family we had outside of Germany. I often walked on the beach alone to Glen Bay from Camp Neustadt to visit Mr. and Mrs. Kurtz. Tante Irene always had an open door and a cold drink ready. Herr Kurtz always made the time for some good fatherly wisdom for me. I met my wife Gloria thru Marie Louise, who was the Maiden of Honor at our wedding in 1979. I can write a book on the wonderful memories with the Kurtz family. I Love you all; my thoughts are with you always. - Posted by: Volker Mann ((Non-Blood Cousins)) on: Feb 11, 2015

  • Dear Liz - My sincerest condolences and thoughts are with you and your family at this time. I sincerely appreciate and hold in my memory the lovely day you had friends out to the cottage and thoroughly enjoyed being hosted by you and your parents and the opportunity to have visited with your dear mom and dad at this time. • Our heartfelt condolences to the Kurtz family. We always remembered Irene as a person that was curious to learn and a great listener. Irene will be remembered for her concerns about others and especially her family and the joy she experienced in their accomplishments.
