NELLIE TURCHYN (nee HYDUK) 1921 - 2014 Nellie Turchyn, born October 9, 1921, passed away peacefully at her home at Poseidon Care Centre, on December 10, 2014. Mom will be sadly missed by her sons Walter (Elaine), Jerry (Mary) and David (Christie), and daughter Kathy, her grandchildren Brian, Daniel, Martina, Cara, and Riki, her sister Mary, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Michael, son Peter, sisters Nettie and Kay, and brothers John, Sam, and Michael. Mom was born in the village of Medika, Manitoba, the youngest of seven children, to Alex and Anna Hyduk. She attended Birch River School. As a young adult, she moved with her sisters to Winnipeg, where she worked at several jobs, including the Bemis Bag Company, and Nutty Club Candy. She met Michael Turchyn at a dance at the UNF Hall, and they were married in September 1953. Mom and Dad moved to Fort Rouge, where Dad owned and operated Corydon Shoe Repair. Mom was a fulltime homemaker, and she and Dad raised a family of five children. Our parents passed on their strong values, to love family, to be a good citizen, and to follow the golden rule. Our family was treated to an array of Mom's delicious home-cooked meals: Ukrainian staples such as pyrogies, holupchi, borscht, and kapusta soup; turkey stew with macaroni; waffles and French toast; home-made pickles; and a Sunday favourite hamburgers. Mom was also active outside the home, and was a long-time member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League at Holy Family Church, where she made many friends and stuffed thousands of pyrogies for church suppers. After Dad passed away, and the children were married, Mom moved to an apartment at St. John's Haven, on Grant Avenue. From this new home, she was able to take the bus to go shopping, to attend appointments, or to have lunch with her sisters at Salisbury House. She enjoyed playing "Kinsman Jackpot Bingo" on TV, and always knew what was going on on "The Young and the Restless". As she became less mobile, home care workers provided daily assistance with meals and cleaning. By 2010, it was time for Mom to move to a care home, where her day-to-day needs would be provided. During the past four years, Mom's mobility continued to decline, and she developed dementia. Although her short-term memory was weak, she retained vivid memories of days gone by. She enjoyed having stories read to her, and watching "Anne of Green Gables" on TV. Last August, she caught but recovered from a case of pneumonia. Unfortunately, a second bout of pneumonia in December could not be overcome. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff on the 2nd floor of the Poseidon Care Centre, who are too numerous to name individually. During Mom's four-year stay at Poseidon, they cared for her as they would a family member, and were especially supportive to Mom and all of us during her final days. A memorial service will be held at Thomson In The Park, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, on December 16 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Winnipeg Humane Society, or another charity dedicated to the care of animals.
