DONALD T. GARVIE Peacefully on December 11, 2014, with his family by his side, Donald T. Garvie passed away at the age of 81 years. Don leaves to mourn his passing the love of his life Jane. Also left to mourn are his two sons Doug and Gord (Suzanne) and his grandchildren Kaitlyn and Tyler, brother Syd (Cathy), nephew Ross (Kelly, Caleb and Jessica), niece Sandra (Peter, Julia). He was predeceased by his parents. Don grew up on Strathcona St. and attended Isaac Brock and Daniel McIntrye School. He was a dedicated Air Canada employee for 39 and a half years working in the stores department and as a buyer. Rushing River was a favourite place for Don and Jane to take the boys for summer getaways. Don loved his family and friends and he was passionate about his sports. Don played baseball and hockey and participated in track. He then went on to coach some future NHL players and from there was thrilled to coach his boys in hockey. Even this past summer Don was heard to be coaching from the sidelines when Doug and Gord played fastball. Don loved to watch his grandchildren playing their sports as well. A celebration of Don's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 18 at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive. The family wishes to thank all those who visited Don while in hospital especially his life long friend Lyle. Special thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital 5E Medicine for their care and compassion during his stay. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Condolences & Memories (17 entries)

  • Our deepest sympathies to Jane and the boys. As a young child, Don was always sort of a hero of mine - he seemed larger than life to me, and I remember his laugh so well. Shelley and I were with Don and Jane at a wonderful "cousins" gathering at Sandy Hook, with Uncle Ab and Aunty Audrey. Don was in fine form and we enjoyed it. - Posted by: Stuart MacPherson and Shelley Rosen (Cousin) on: Dec 22, 2014

  • Learning of Coach Garvie's passing brought me back to my days as a teenage hockey player in Crestview. He coached the team that his son Gord and I played on, and he did a great job of it. I am coaching my own sons and their peers now, and I am a better coach for the example I was shown by Coach Garvie in those days. I have one particular vivid memory to share, of a hockey game long ago. I had essentially run the other team's goalie, not out of malice (I tell myself), but just being careless while chasing the puck. It was a feisty game to begin with, and that added fuel to the fire. While skating to the penalty box, in my innocent unwariness, I had my head down, chastising myself for taking the penalty, and I heard Don's warning shout (I can still hear his voice: "Get your head up!") just in time to get my head and hands up to deflect the high stick of an opponent apparently intent on showing me the error of my ways. Afterwards, I was appreciative and thankful for Don's game savvy, seeing what was about to happen and ensuring one of his guys didn't get hurt. It's the kind of thing a player remembers about a coach, with thanks, even all these years later. Reading in the obit that Don's coaching fire kept burning right through to recent days made me smile, and reflect on some good old days, and one of the coaches who did much to make them so. • As a medical student taking care of Mr. Garvie, I can honestly say that he will always be a distinct memory as I fondly remember my time on 5E Medicine. Frequent conversations with Mr. Garvie about his life experiences and adventures were always inspiring. Understanding his past was a critical portion of understanding his stay in hospital. It was heart-warming to see his loved ones visiting him to spend time with him and put a smile on his face, whether it be in his room or in his favourite hallway spot. Seeing how much he was loved and the increase in his spirits when surrounded by familiar faces was one of the highlights of my day. I will always remember Mr. Garvie’s strong spirit and the kindness he showed towards me. I hope that he has found his peace. My sincerest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Mr. Donald Garvie. - Posted by: Ruchi C. () on: Dec 13, 2014

  • Deepest sympathies to Jane and family. Don will missed but thoughts and fond memories will remain. As old friends we go back to Strathcona St and the good old days we shared with Don & Sid. We grew up together and even though the years did send us on different paths, we always remained friends. Don was a great guy with that infectious chuckle and smile and will be missed by all who knew him. We are not able to attend his service, we shall keep him in our thoughts. - Posted by: Jim and Audrey Swail (Friend) on: Dec 13, 2014
