Jim was born on December 24, 1924 in the Norwood area of Winnipeg. He would live in Norwood nearly all his life. He joined the Navy during the war and saw active service on convoy duty to England and back. For the rest of his life he would regale family and friends with his navy stories. He then fulfilled a dream by finishing his high school education, which was interrupted by the war, then going on to the University of Manitoba to achieve a B.A. Jim and Monica were blessed with many good friends. He was an active member of St. Thomas More Chapel, Winnipeg Winter Club, the Hotel Association, and Refit Centre. In his early years he was an avid duck hunter and during his whole life, a voracious reader. He took an active interest in politics and even ran for city councillor at one point.
