PHILIP REMI VANDENDRIESSCHE May 15, 1941 December 12, 2014 Peacefully on Friday, December 12, 2014 at the age of 73 and surrounded by his family, Phil lost his battle with cancer. Phil will join his daughter Debbie in Heaven, also joining him in Heaven is his brother Donny (2013), Mother Annie (1981) and Father Remi (1974). Phil leaves behind his beloved wife Geri, son Derek (Jenny) and adored granddaughter Alexis. Phil also leaves behind his brother Bob and many other brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. Phil was born in Winnipeg and was the eldest of three boys. Phil spent most of his life in Winnipeg with a brief stint in Saskatoon. Phil worked at Wes-Trans for over 40 years and became very handy with cars, trucks and things around the house. Phil enjoyed family and many weekends were spent with his brother and sister-in-laws. Phil and Geri's house was usually the spot for the party. In Phil's middle years he enjoyed watching his son play hockey, but had the most fun with the hockey trips and parent parties this was a great time in Phil's life. Phil's true love was his wife Geri. The only time they spent apart was when they went to work. Phil and Geri spent 54 glorious years together and were best friends. They did everything together including travel, hosting parties and spending time with friends and family. We would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff that cared for Phil at Riverview Health Centre, especially Tony, who went above and beyond to make sure Dad was comfortable. A memorial service will be held at St. Emile Catholic Church on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made on behalf of Phil to the Canadian Cancer Society. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal. You will be forever loved and missed, till we meet again (see you later). "We love you Papa Phil"

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • Phil was simply one of the nicest people it has been my privilege to know in this life. - Posted by: Terry Mondor (Friend) on: Oct 29, 2015

  • I have Countless fond memories of playing with my cousins on Bruce road at Granny's and uncle Phil and auntie Geri's. I used to love listening to my dad and uncles telling stories of their pasts. Thank you for being a part of those memories uncle Phil. You will be missed. My love and condolences go out to auntie Geri and Derek and Jenny and their daughter. My heart and thoughts are with you during your time of sorrow. Love your nephew and godson, Dallas. - Posted by: Dallas Van Den Driessche (Nephew and Godson ) on: Dec 18, 2014

  • Phil, Bob and Don were our coolest cousins. We had a large extended family of parents and children that visited our Grandparents on Sundays and spent quality time with our families. The Van boys were always nice to all of their female cousins and Phil being the oldest made all of us feel special.I always respected him and valued his opinion. My thoughts and prayers are with Gerry, his son and granddaughter. I'm sure all who have passed before him are embracing him with love. Rest in peace cousin. - Posted by: Edith Thiessen (First cousin) on: Dec 17, 2014

  • Will always remember the time we spent with the Van boys on Bruce Road. All three were a positive influence in our lives. Very supportive. Our condolences to Geri and family. May loving memories help guide your family through this time of sorrow. - Posted by: Don and Jan Matthews (cousin) on: Dec 17, 2014

  • We met Phil and Geri when our sons played hockey together. Phil liked the camaraderie the parents enjoyed. They were so friendly and supportive of the hockey team and even hosted a get to know everyone party when the team was made. Phil never missed a practice or game and even helped other parents with fundraising. He and Geri were definitely team players. He will be missed. - Posted by: Jim and Sherron Kelly (Friends) on: Dec 16, 2014

  • Phillip Van was my cousin but him, Donny, and Bobby were like my older brothers in my younger years. I spent a lot of time on John Bruce growing up as circumstances allowed me to. It was to my advantage because as a young girl needing guidance, good old fashioned love and fun times I had it with these guys. They provided these necessary qualities and had no problem expressing them from taking me riding in their great cars to all the fudgicles I could eat. They were like the Cartwrights on Bonanza, still watch it, with Phil being Adam the oldest and more serious one. I well remember when be brought Gerry to our Berrydale home to show her off as she remained sitting on his knee all night & that was it, True Love. I think she was 16. Phil had a strong silent presence about him and was kind, thoughtful and always ready to lend a handsome hand. We were always laughing and fooling around with Aunty Annie dissing and datting the whole time. Life changes all the time for us so thank God for light hearted memories. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Gerry and Derek and the family who were there for him during these changes. I know you will miss him a lot. He was one of the good. love Myrna - Posted by: Myrna Moore (first cousin) on: Dec 16, 2014

  • It has been many years since I have seen you last. The Vans were always there when my mom needed their help. I remember Philip and Geri coming to see Granny McDougall, there was always a laugh there. - Posted by: Gail Fontaine (mc dougall) (couisin ) on: Dec 15, 2014

  • I always appreciated Phil' s expertise and professional manner when he worked at Westrans. Please accept my condolences for your family. - Posted by: Bob Stoesz (Customer) on: Dec 15, 2014

  • My sympathies to aunty Geri and to cousin Derek, his wife Jenny and their daughter. It was great to hear my dad (Bob) and Uncle Phil laugh with each other as they reminisced about the 'good ole days'. So glad to have seen them visit and chuckle about stories of their younger years. It is good when family can be close like that. I pray that you will find peace as you are now dealing with this loss - be strong and support each other. • I was fortunate enough to live on John Bruce while growing up and some of my fondest memories are of my time spent in Phil and Geri's home. My brother Lee and I played endlessly with Derek and both Phil and Geri were always so loving and generous. All of my love, Rachelle - Posted by: Rachelle Baird (Fontaine) (2nd cousin) on: Dec 15, 2014

  • God bless Phil, Geri, Derek, Alexis, Jenny, Brother Bob {Robert} and all relatives, nephews nieces etc. Phil, since we played together as kids and you taught me as a 6 year old to crawdad fish in the Seine River and was the oldest and the more educated in life's ways you were the king cat of the infamous 5. That being Bobby, Donny (Van}, Peter Sholberg & Ray Dirckx. God Bless you Phil and we will all meet again as in our discussion a couple of weeks past. - Posted by: Ray L Dirckx (Cousin) on: Dec 15, 2014

  • We always went to Winnipeg for summer holidays. The first thing we did was head out to Aunty Annie's. Uncle Remi and the boys used to tease us but we loved it. We had so much fun doing things with them. We have lots of fond memories of these summers. Our condolences to Geri and the family. - Posted by: The Rodway Girls - Shirley, Frances, Penny and Pat (Cousins) on: Dec 15, 2014
