GERDA KAROLINE HANSCH Everybody's Oma' Following a beautiful Advent Dinner at her home on December 12, 2014, Gerda Karoline Hansch passed away suddenly, but peacefully, surrounded by her family. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Norbert Hansch (Laura), Ilse Hansch Pflug (Manfred); grandchildren Ernst Hansch (Lori) and very special great-grandson Wilson Hansch, Christian Hansch, Erica Pflug, Marcus Pflug (Laurie), as well as her brother-in-law Christian Hansch (Maria), nephew Ernst Hansch (Audrey Nolten) and family in California, niece Eleonora Jugnauth (Anand) and family in Kelowna, Christopher Hansch (Suzy) and family in Seattle and many cousins in Heilbronn, Germany. She will be dearly missed by her devoted caregiver, Emelie, her many wonderful friends- including Frank and Ursula, Thea, Gerda and Johanna, as well as Sheila, who shared a cherished relationship and is forever close to her heart. Not to be forgotten are her constant canine companions Angus (Gussie) and Izzie, who never left her side and as Oma said "They brought a lot of sunshine in my life". Gerda was predeceased by her husband Ernst Hansch in 1986. She celebrated her 90th birthday this year with her loving family and friends. Gerda was born in Neckargartach, Germany, on February 5, 1924, daughter of Albert and Frieda Weller and sister to Martha. Her incredible gift to all of us is her manuscript: Glaube, Hoffnung, Liebe-Meine Lebensgeschichte, (Faith, Hope and Love-My Life Story). At seventy-five, she became computer savvy and over the next fifteen years her efforts evolved into a 600 page manuscript--a book about her journey through life, which she wrote with perseverance and tremendous energy. Her capacity to recall details was astounding and her work is a vibrant, descriptive narrative that will be treasured for generations. An extremely organized person, she was also our official archivist and ensured documents, letters, photos and material relating to family, friends and the community were preserved. Gerda was a courageous young immigrant, partner to Ernst in new ventures, bookkeeper, carpenter, the ultimate Schwaebische Hausfrau, baker of the fine German Tortes and Christmas cookies, gardener, singer, party and event planner, book-lover, long-time believer in reduce, re-use and recycle, collector of family heirlooms, recent personal training convert, devoted baby and dog sitter, and crafter of the beautiful crocheted blankets that wrap us in warmth and love. Oma was blessed to be in her house and surrounded by her loved ones until her last moments. We know that Oma has touched the lives of many and her thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity have been amply returned with great affection and loyalty, and for this, we are very grateful. Several months ago at a pre-op assessment, she informed the doctor-"I didn't retire", "I don't have time to die" and "I have to see my next great-grandchild". She lived each day to the fullest and appreciated all those who kept her healthy, strong, sharp and made her days complete. Above all, she was proud to be an Oma to everyone and to give them her love. We will bid Oma Auf Wiedersehen on Friday, December 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota St., followed by Kaffee, Kuchen, Refreshments. Private family interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Luther Home Memorial Account, 1081 Andrews St., Winnipeg, MB, R2V 2G9. Ruhe in Frieden, liebe Mama und Oma. Gott segne und behuete Dich. • I remember many wonderful parties at your parents' home during our involvement with the German Canadian Business and Professional Men's Association. She will be missed but you have so many wonderful memories to carry you through. My sympathy to you and your families. - Posted by: Sue Heim (Wife of the late Tony Heim, and friend of Hannah Pflug) on: Dec 17, 2014

  • Gerda Hansch was about as perfect as one can get without being boring. She was hospitable, circumspect, caring and loving to everyone she met. She added and contributed considerably to the Canadian Mosaic and she gave the Swabians, who are generally squeakingly parsimonious a new reputation of generosity. Sine Gerda improved everything she loved and touched, she will be busy and much sought after in heaven as well. I intend to benefit from her largesse when I cross the bar. Ruhe sanft! - Posted by: Jack Thiessen (family friend since 1961) on: Dec 17, 2014
