FLORENCE EVELYN BRIDGWATER (nee RAYSON) It is with saddened hearts we announce the passing of Florence Evelyn Bridgwater (nee Rayson) peacefully in her sleep at St. Boniface Hospital on Monday, December 15, 2014 at the age of 92 years. She was predeceased by her sisters, Norma Hunter and Ruth Howes, her brother, Harry Rayson, her first husband, Alvin Ramsay and second husband, Leonard Bridgwater. She is survived by her sisters, June Ratz of Ontario and Fran Lucas (Ray) of BC. Also her daughter, Jane Stephen and son, Lindsay Ramsay (Valerie) and her granddaughters, Krista, Roberta (Brendt) and Jillian. Florence was born on a small farm near Harriston, Ontario on October 24, 1922. She grew up as a real farm girl, working hard on the farm, taking care of animals and people -especially her sisters and brother. After the war she married Alvin Ramsay and moved to rural Manitoba. They lived in several small towns including Ste. Anne and Niverville, during this period Jane and Lindsay were born. They finally settled in Winnipeg where Florence resided for the rest of her life. She worked several jobs while being a homemaker, eventually ended up at St. Boniface Hospital working mainly in the nurseries. In later years she returned to the hospital working on the 5ECU Ward. She met and married Len. They spent many happy years together travelling regularly to Hawaii. After Len passed she continued to travel including trips to Alaska, Nashville and Panama Canal. Florence was very proud of her three granddaughters. She enjoyed hearing of their many adventures. She spent much of her later life taking care of children for many families who all came to know her as Grandma Flo. She was very proud of her extended family. Over recent years Florence had many serious health issues but through her sheer will she carried on. She lived in her own home on Bibeau Bay where she cut the grass, shovelled the snow, gardened, cared for many dogs and walked at least three miles a day. She was fiercely determined, remaining active, independent and connecting with new friends into her 90s. Florence had a strong faith. Her family is thankful for the support and love she found at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. In keeping with Florence's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating her life will be held today Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Florence may be made to the CNIB or the Winnipeg Humane Society. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU & CO. Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • I have had the honour to attend numerous official events as a Special Olympics Manitoba athlete. Now, I am thinking of the people whom I haven't crossed paths with in a very long time. A woman whose courage has impacted the lives of others has a very special place in my heart. - Posted by: Philip (--) on: Dec 19, 2021

  • Mrs. Bridgwater (as I knew her best) was a very unique, lovely lady. As children she welcomed us many times to swing on the lovely big swing in the back yard. She was always very friendly and giving..a wonderful lady. I moved away in 1973 but I did see her after that and we had a wonderful visit over coffee. They don't make them like her anymore....a special lady that I will always remember.... - Posted by: Denyse Bourre (Desorcy) (Neighbour) on: Dec 22, 2014

  • It is so sad to hear that Flo has passed away. I was really blessed during my stay with Flo as a student in her house for three years back in 1991, and then again for another three years in 2007. She was always caring and considerate for me helping me whenever I needed. I learned a lot from her. She was an excellent role model for me to be strong and tough, leading an independent life, cutting grass and shovelling snow by herself, walking the dog everyday even in snow time, and always reaching out to people to offer her sincere help. I miss her a lot and will always keep her smiles, voice, words, and love in my heart. May God comfort her entire family, Jane & Lindsay families, at this difficult time of loss. - Posted by: Kitty CHAN (Friend in Hong Kong) on: Dec 21, 2014

  • Our Deepest Sympathy to Jane, Lindsay and families. Grandma Flo was an interesting person who had experienced a lot in her lifetime. Her generosity was supreme. God has called another Angel to be our Guardians... Grandma Flo you are greatly missed Viola, Jonathan and family - Posted by: Viola Bell (Friend) on: Dec 20, 2014

  • Our family's was blessed to have met Gramma Flo over 30 years ago. She lovingly looked after our 5 children when Paul and I went away or when I went back to work. You never had to worry about anything when Flo was left in charge. She ran the household with love but with a firm and fair hand. I will never forget the time when she sat on the floor outside my son Kyle's(age:2) bedroom door holding on to the doorknob so he wouldn't leave the room during his time out. There was a lot of screaming, yelling and kicking the door but Flo did not give in. It was a sight to witness. What a great women! Gramma Flo was one of a kind and her heart was full of love for every child and dog that she met. The world is a better place for having Flo. We will miss her and always keep her in our hearts. • I am sorry for your loss. Flo was always a kind, gracious lady, I will remember her fondly. My sincerest condolences to her entire family. - Posted by: Lauris H Kleven () on: Dec 19, 2014

  • Flo was a special woman who served as an inspiration for us all...she was a role model, a care giver who opened her home to students so they could meet their life goals. She was a treasured Grandma for our 4 legged child Benji-a great participator in life always willing to share her opinions about current events including politics, sports-her favorite hockey team led by Jonathon Toews and was extremely proud of her family achievements. She will be missed. - Posted by: Janice (Christie) & Harvey Chezick (friends ) on: Dec 19, 2014

  • Grandma Flo as we all called her was the sweetest doggie sitter we came to know and love. She always answered her phone with "hello....just a minute I have to turn up my hearing aid...ok go ahead. Then she'd say on your Buddy and Rocky mom. " She will be "fur" ever missed by all the families whose dogs she watched. We will miss all her stories and her love and infectious smile. We are praying peace and comfort over Jane and Lindsay families. Bob and Renee Dewar - Posted by: Renee and Bob Dewar (Friend) on: Dec 19, 2014
