RICHARD (DICK) ARTHUR GILHULY On December 17, 2014 Richard (Dick) Arthur Gilhuly, our husband, father, grandfather and uncle left our world but not our hearts. Dick began his journey in Edam, Saskatchewan on March 14, 1927, with parents Ian and Ada Gilhuly. He grew up in a prairie doctor's family with a younger brother Ian, and sister Sally. Dick's family moved around southern Manitoba settling in Minnedosa long enough for Dick to attend high school and meet his soul mate Shirley Alexander. Dick and Shirley were married in Minnedosa on November 4, 1950 and moved to Brandon where they began their family. Family has always been very important to Dick and his five children were a very big part of that. Dick and Shirley had five children in seven years and they were a very modern family with Shirley working outside the house. Many dinners and bed times fell to Dick. Whoever was misbehaving got the seat to his right not a spot anyone wanted to be in. He liked nothing better than large family dinners followed by a highly spirited evening of cards. Once they were old enough to join in, the grandchildren took great pleasure in trying to beat him. He was very active in all the sports that the kids participated in attending endless games and practices as both a parent and a coach. He was a devoted member of the community spending years as a Cub leader and little league baseball coach long after his own children were done participating in those activities. At 55, Dick retired and he and Shirley set off on an adventure living in Africa for a couple of years and travelling the world. During their time away Dick and Shirley made some very close friends and kept in touch as much as possible. Baseball was near and dear to Dick's heart and the LA Dodgers have lost a longtime fan. At 75, he went on a baseball tour with family to Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City enjoying games in all those cities. The last 18 months have been very hard on Dick as his mobility and health slowly slipped away from him. His daughter Sherrill was there day in and day out to care for him along with his loving wife Shirley. He continued to enjoy seeing Rod and Colleen for Saturday night dinner right to the end. As each change occurred Dick accepted his fate with dignity, grace and a sense of humor. We are grateful that Dick has finally been rewarded with eternal rest. Dick leaves to remember him his wife of 64 years Shirley, and sons Rick (Patti), Rod (Colleen) and daughters Sherrill, Jill (Rob) and Penny. Dick was proud of his grandchildren Ian, Connor, Marc, Alex, Greg, Reilly, Shane, Dana, Jeff, Aidan and all of their accomplishments. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews. We would like to give special thanks to all the workers who helped Dick remain at home - we appreciate their efforts and kindness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
