HARRY HILL August 17, 1928 - December 16, 2014 Peacefully, on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, Harry passed away at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 86 years. Left to forever cherish Harry's memory are his loving wife of 60 years, Florence, and his children Susan (Eric), Bruce (Bonny), and Ralph (Winnie). He was a very special papa to David, Craig, Stephanie, and Adrianne. He also leaves a brother; sisters; as well as nieces and nephews across Canada. Harry was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He and Florence met when they were both posted to CFB Greenwood in Nova Scotia, and were married shortly after. He was a pilot in the RCAF before pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Manitoba. Harry was able to merge his passion for flying with his engineering background throughout his working years, first as a test pilot at Pratt and Whitney in Longueuil, Québec, and then as an aircraft accident investigator with the federal aviation authority in Winnipeg. Harry had a life-long interest in learning and was a very active volunteer in the Kirkfield-Westwood community. An avid do-it-yourselfer and an early environmentalist, he built much of his own furniture, converted two vans to RVs and built his own environmentally friendly and energy efficient home in Charleswood. Harry travelled extensively with Florence throughout Canada and the United States in their RVs and often with Ralph and Winnie to Europe, China and Ecuador. He became interested in long-distance running and entered and completed the first Manitoba Marathon. He went on to complete several more. In accordance with Harry's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. The family would like to thank the caring and supportive staff at Sturgeon Creek II and Grace Hospital. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665, is in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com "He will be sadly missed by family and friends."

  • My condolences to the Hill family for the loss of such a great man. I had the very good fortune to know and work with Harry at Transport Canada for some years. He was a wonderful man in my view, and we got on very well, always. We talked up a storm in the office and enjoyed flying with each other on many flights. He was very pleasant, personable, smart and great sense of humour, the Harry I knew and liked being around. We flew the Kingair and DC3 together and he was a first rate pilot. I have many great memories of Harry which I will cherish forever. My only regret is that I didn't meet and get to know Harry sooner, and to see him after he left Transport Canada and went separate ways. Thank you Harry, it was a hoot!!!!! - Posted by: Brian Dick (Friend) on: Dec 23, 2014

  • I knew Harry as a member of MUGs (Mac User's Group for Seniors). I worked with him on the Program Committee when he was the Chairperson. I appreciated his quiet confidence and willingness to listen to the input of others in his role as Chair. He was a kind man who had a wonderful smile. I have missed his presence in the last year.
