LILY SCHMIDT January 21, 1928 - December 15, 2014 It is with sadness and grateful hearts that our family announces the passing of our much beloved mother and grandmother, and great grandmother, Lily Schmidt, age 86, of Winnipeg (formerly Elm Creek, MB) at Pembina Place Mennonite Personal Care Home. Lily was predeceased by her husband Nicholas in 2012. Lily is survived by seven children: Ed (Jeanette), Esther (Elmer Froese), Barb (Dave Nudd), Jan (David Pankratz), Dave (Joanne), Pat (Tom Koop-deceased), and Phil (Pat). As well, she was blessed with 21 grandchildren (plus 17 spouses) and 28 great grandchildren. Lily will also be missed by her sisters and brothers- in-law as well as her many nieces and nephews. Mom, an only child, was born to Jacob and Sara Friesen on January 21, 1928 in Gretna, Manitoba. After her father miraculously recovered from tuberculosis, they moved to Winnipeg where mom attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and finished her grade 12 year at Mennonite Collegiate in Gretna. Mom married Nicholas Schmidt in 1949 and in 1954 they moved to the Culross area where they raised their family (seven children born within ten years) on a mixed farm. In 1982, they moved back to Winnipeg where they enjoyed many years together - travelling and spending time with their children as well as many friends and relatives. Mom volunteered in their church Portage Avenue and Pregnancy and Family Support Services Inc. Mom was thankful for God's many blessings and faithfulness over the years. Viewing for family and friends will be held at Portage Ave. Mennonite Brethren Church, 1420 Portage Ave. on Friday, January 2, 2015 beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a service to follow at 5:00 p.m. at the same location. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lily's memory to Matthew Training Center (Mennonite Brethren Missions), Guadalajara, Mexico and Square One (formerly Family Life Network).

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Travis & I were privileged to get to know your mother/grandmother/great grandmother especially during our years at PAC. She was plucky, had a great sense of humour, understanding, accepting and more. She lived well, honouring God. We were sorry to miss the funeral service but know our faithful, gracious heavenly Father will surround each of you with comfort and love. - Posted by: Lois Reimer (Friend from church) on: Jan 04, 2015
