Date of Passing: Dec 21, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRICHARD (DICK) ABRAHAM JOHNS September 12, 1926 December 21, 2014 It is with deep sadness our family announces the death of Dick Johns on Sunday, December 21, 2014, at Grace Hospital, at the age of 88 years. Left to forever cherish Dick's memory are his sons, David (Lesia) and Richard; grandchildren Daniel and Laura Johns, Jonathan (Aimee), and Catherine (Bob) Ruta; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Marian; daughter Donna Johns Ruta; brothers David (Mary) and Joseph (Audrey); and sisters Marjorie (Cecil) Mason, and Betty Cotton. Dick was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and grew up on Disraeli Street. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish, attending Norquay School and later, St. Paul's High School. During his working career, Dick was employed for almost 40 years by the Codville Company and successor company the Oshawa Group, where he forged many lasting friendships. Dad and the family were inaugural members of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, where Dad attended for 55 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his ushering duties and assisting with Tuesday night bingo as long as he was able, and made many good lifelong friends. When Mom became ill, Dad became her caregiver. He did his best to look after her as well as she had taken care of him through 54 years of marriage. Dad was an avid sports fan following the Jets and the Bombers. He was also an active member of Assiniboine Golf Club until health forced him to put away the clubs. Dad was happiest spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Parish, 2400 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, with Rev. Fr. José Eduardo Medeiros, presiding. The family would like to thank the caring and supportive staff of Sturgeon Creek II Retirement Residence, his home care workers, and the staff at Grace Hospital for ensuring Dad was able to keep his independence as long as possible. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6, or to a charity of your choice. Wojcik's Funeral Chapels & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665, is in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com

Please know how sorry I am to read of the passing of your father. I was able to visit with him quite often while my father 'shared' a room with him at the Deer Lodge Hospital last spring. He was such a kind and thoughtful person. While my father was sick, Dick and another roommate kept vigil over him. This is something I will never forget. I know he was so looking forward to going back to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Home. Dick was a special person, one who will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Rose (visitor at Deer Lodge) on: Dec 24, 2014
