ANDREW (ANDY) WANGEN Born July 28, 1934 in East Kildonan, MB, son of Louise and Knut Wangen, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2014, in Selkirk, MB at the age of 80 years. Andy passed away as he had lived his life - with family by his side. Andy is survived by his beautiful wife of 58 years, Vivian Wangen and their five wonderful children and five grandchildren whom Andy adored. He is mourned by his sons David (Colleen), Leonard (Laura), Arvid (Cybèle) and Raymond (fiancee Rini Sumartojo), daughter Alaine (Sean) Brawley, and grandchildren Cole, Nolan, Sonoma, Cordélia and Persephone., as well as his cousins Lucyna and Victor. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings Garry, Tom and Jean, mother-in-law Pauline, who instilled in him a love of the woods and cooking, and sister-in-law Lovine Kobylak. Andy attended East Kildonan Collegiate, where he met then married the love of his life, high school sweetheart Vivian. Andy started work early with his father's K. Wangen Construction in East Kildonan, MB and they worked together for many years, giving him a work ethic he would pass on to his children. In 1973 he moved his family to Red Deer, AB, where he built and managed Uncle Ben's Brewery. Later, they moved to Calgary, where Andy managed the Blue Label Bottling plant. After a later career in the construction industry, often working alongside his son Arvid, Andy and Vivian decided to spend their retirement years back at Lester Beach in the family cottage Andy started building in 1963. Andy loved his garden (he tolerated his deer), particularly his tomatoes, growing them from seeds each year (200+ plants) and sharing the fruits of his labour with friends and family. He had an innovative mind and always had one project or another on the go, usually labours of love. Andy was fortunate to spend Christmas 2013 with the entire family in Squamish, BC and he celebrated a bumper blueberry crop in 2014, filling no less than 30 ice cream pails while walking through the woods with his cane. Through the fall and winter months you could always chat with Andy about the Minnesota Vikings, the Toronto Raptors or whatever book he was reading that week. A private memorial celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2015 at the lake in Belair, Manitoba. A special thank you to Barry and Michelle Kobylak and their entire family for their kindness, love and support over the years. Strong, brave and witty to the end, Andy was loved by many. We will miss him. Thank you to the kind staff at the Selkirk Hospital. In lieu of flowers, any memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Lung Association.

  • Words? Hmm a man of many, he has taught both Hugh and I so many things. Work to Andy was not a hard mans work! He was forever doing one thing or the other, he was not one to sit still! He was forever on the go, doing things around the cabin, blueberry picking, mushroom picking, sauerkraut making, fixing the ponds, and the list can go on and on. But the most we will remember him for, is letting us in to his family life and making us feel like family! We may show up, a shout given but still those big strong arms let us stay! His gruff voice scared us but yet the loving talks invited us to stay! Andy, pop pop as I referred to you with others, you will be truly missed, sauerkraut will take on a different meaning, blueberries won't taste the same! Hugh and I have hoisted a Canadian in your honour, Gibson rye, even though we didn't drink it, will be bought and drunk by us with you in mind. Thank you for all you have done for both Hugh and I over the years, a better man could not be had! With love, thanks, and friendship. We will dearly miss you xoxo - Posted by: Carol-Anne and Hugh Hansen (Friends) on: Dec 27, 2014
