ARTHUR BERNARD KOMUS
Date of Passing: Dec 22, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryARTHUR BERNARD KOMUS Peacefully, on Monday, December 22, 2014, Art passed away at home, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with his loving wife by his side, at the age of 92 years, three days short of his 93rd birthday. Art will be deeply missed by his wife Gwen, of over 66 years of marriage; his son Scott (Sheelagh); daughter Lori (Lawrence) Parsons; son-in-law Blair Webster; grandchildren Chris, Heather, Shena, Sara and Marlene; great-granddaughter Nilaya; brother-in-law Keith Scott; as well as by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth; brothers Nick (Dorothy), Rev. Peter, Joe (Jean), and Bill (Lee); sister Anne Palkert (Lou); and his eldest daughter Carol Webster. On December 25, 1921, Art was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After graduating from St. John's High School, he worked as a printer for Public Press. He then went on to work as an executive for the Winnipeg Typographical Union as well as teach Layout and Design at Red River College. Art enjoyed teaching and his pupils looked forward to his end of the year parties at Art and Gwen's home. He retired from the Union in 1984 but continued to teach at Red River for many years afterwards. Art held his family especially close and filled our home with unconditional love and laughter. He loved the outdoors, building slides and skating rinks in the winter and taking his family on camping trips in the summer. Art enjoyed traveling and he and Gwen took a trip to Europe as well as Mexico to visit their daughter Carol. In his retirement years, Art enjoyed woodworking and made dollhouses for his granddaughters and a garage for his grandson one Christmas. In 1989, Art and Gwen bought a cottage at West Hawk Lake where they spent several years entertaining family and friends, and watching their grandchildren grow up. He loved spending time sitting with Gwen in their porch sipping on wine and talking into the wee hours of the morning. Art liked helping people and fought for the little guy in his career and throughout his life. Art was a dedicated husband and fun-loving dad who instilled solid family values into his children and grandchildren. His final advice was, "to be kind and love each other", which Art did his whole life. In accordance with Art's wishes, a private family gathering will be held in Art and Gwen's home on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Palliative Care who always showed such kindness and compassion to Art and his family. My deepest sympathy in the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. I remember all the good times the Walkty family spent with the Komus family camping and picnicking around Manitoba, in our young days. Art was a wonderful relaxed family man. Art was such a gentleman and kind friend. He would stop by my union office and share his experiences and background info on labour issues. I treasured and looked forward to his visits. My deepest condolences to Gwen and the family. - Posted by: Cindy Garofalo (Union Sister and friend) on: Dec 30, 2014
