LYDIA BRAUN Lydia Braun, 92, West Fargo, ND, died on Friday, December 26, 2014 at Sheyenne Crossings, West Fargo. Lydia was born July 9, 1922 at Slavgorod, Russia to Jacob and Anna (Wiens) Braun. Due to the great turmoil in Russia and the risk to their lives and freedom, the family escaped Russia leaving behind their home, community, and a prosperous life of owning and operating a flour mill to emigrate to Germany and then to Alberta, Canada where they lived in a vacant grain silo. Eventually, they settled in Manitoba. Lydia was educated in Winnipeg, received her B.A. in Nursing, and worked at Winnipeg General Hospital as an operating room supervisor and also in neonatal intensive care. Lydia married John Braun on August 31, 1947 in Winnipeg. They moved to Gackle, ND in 1951 where Lydia worked as an RN in the Gackle Hospital. This was followed by a move to Napoleon in 1954 and a subsequent move to Ashley where Lydia worked in the Ashley Hospital. After returning to Napoleon in 1965, Lydia served as the Administrator of the Napoleon retirement home until 1974 and then worked at the Wishek Hospital until retirement in 1994. Lydia's 23 years as an RN were a labour of love. She moved to Pioneer House in Fargo, ND in 2004 and to Sheyenne Crossings in 2011. Lydia was a lifelong learner, enjoyed traveling, and was dedicated to her church. She will always be remembered for her gift of hospitality. She enjoyed music, the symphony, and appreciated fine arts. Lydia served on the ND Governor's Council on the Status of Women and as President of the ND Long Term Care Association. Lydia is survived by two daughters, Carol (David Wolfram) Braun of Eden Prairie, MN and Alice (Kevin) Hawley of West Fargo; two grandchildren, Katelyn (Jacob) Anderson of Cold Spring, MN and Michael Hawley of West Fargo, one great-grandchild, Cassius Anderson of Cold Spring; two sisters, Louise Brown of Vancouver, BC and Joan (John) Doerksen of Coquitlam, BC; three sisters-in-law, Pat (George) Braun, Amanda (Ernie) Brown, and Marilyn (Nick) Brown; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant son, Glenn; sister, Jean; and brothers, Walter, Jack, Ernie, Nick, and two infant brothers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Funeral: Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Fargo, ND. Burial: Napoleon Cemetery. West Funeral Home & Life Tribute Center westfuneralhome.com
