ERNEST G. JOHNSON Ernest G. Johnson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the Deer Lodge Centre. He was predeceased by his wife Mary, in 1990, after 46 years of marriage. He will be fondly remembered by his son Grant (Wenda); his granddaughter Lindsay (James), and his two great-grandsons, Oliver and Russell. Ernest was born at Oak Hammock on February 7, 1918 and attended Earl Grey School in that district for Grades 1 to 9. (Grade 9 was taken by Correspondence Course as only Grades 1 to 8 were taught). In 1932 the Johnson family moved to Stony Mountain and Ernest completed Grades 10 and 11 at the Stony Mountain High School. Ernest worked for the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company in Flin Flon, Manitoba from 1938 to 1941. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1941 as a radio mechanic and spent five years in England, qualifying as a Radar Technician and attaining the rank of Flying Officer. In 1946 he returned to Canada with his wife Mary and daughter Anna. Ernest spent the next five years at the University of Manitoba taking two years Arts and four years law. (He took his third year law during the summer.) In 1951 he graduated with an honours LLB. Ernest spent two years in general practice with the law firm of Tupper and Adams. In 1953 he joined the legal department of Great-West Life and in due course was appointed an Associate Treasurer responsible for Property Investments. He retired from Great-West Life in 1983. Ernest never forgot his Oak Hammock roots. He was active in Ducks Unlimited Canada as a director when the marsh was restored to its former condition before drainage and the dry years of the 1930s. He became a Life sponsor of that project. He had outlived his active life but never outlived his kind and thoughtful ways. Always the gentle man...and always a man with a lively sense of humour...and always grateful. In memory of Ernie, if you wish, donations can be made to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation or a charity of your choice. There will be a private family service at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • To Grant & family. Sincere sympathy on the passing of your father. I met him as my father was a resident at DLC also. When I asked how your Dad was, he would say "tolerable". I would say to him, you always say that and he would chuckle. Then we would both chuckle. I went and saw him after my Dad's passing (3 days before his passing). I wish I had met him many years ago!S incerely John Parker. - Posted by: John Parker (Friend) on: Jan 06, 2015

  • Grant, Wenda and family, Our deepest condolences on the passing of your father. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were my dearest friends for over 40 years, and I consider them as my adopted parents. Their immense friendliness, compassion and understanding of new immigrants' needs were greatly appreciated by me and many others at the International Centre were they contributed so much compassion and energy in helping us to integrate into Canadian culture and society. God bless them both. Mate (Mike), Rada and Sandra Prusina, Calgary, Ab. - Posted by: Mate Prusina (friend) on: Jan 05, 2015

  • To Grant and family, although it has been many years of not being in touch, I have often thought of your family. Your mom and my mom were wonderful friends and I so remember the visits of your family when you came to Stonewall to visit. I also remember the visits we made when we got to stay at your home in the city. They were big trips for country kids! I was sorry to see the notice of your dad's passing, but I am sure he had a full life and he is now at rest. His memories will last forever and we send our sincere sympathy to all the family, Sincerely Ken and AUDREY Klimpke (Ross). • Grant, Wenda, Lindsay and family. My sincerest sympathy on Ernie's passing. He was a loving and kind man and I'm sorry that we had lost touch over the last years. My children and I have fond memories of time spent with Ernie & Mary. I think he must have owned a "Patty-stacker" just to make burgers for a picnic/barbeque at the farm. The kids all treasure the summer 'camp' at 55 Nassau. We have lots of wonderful memories of sharing wine and a bowl of witches' brew, too. With much love Margaret Thompson - Posted by: Margaret Thompson/Donovan (cousin in-law. ) on: Jan 03, 2015
