• She was Aunt Mary to me. Always of a sharp mind to the end. I'm not sure why I continued to accept her challenge to play cribbage as a young boy, for she was a card shark. It was Mary that ensured that I knew what and where the "skunk line" was in the game. So it was with considerable pride that I passed from boy to man on the first occasion of besting her at her game in her living room at Lake of the Woods. Mary worked at keeping in contact with me and I returned her favour each year as I would pass through Winnipeg heading west at the conclusion of each summer on our bucolic lake. As the years passed, so did the size, age and maturity of the Konantz clan I would trail through her apartment on Wellington Crescent. She was graceful, welcoming and always had a box of Oreos for the kids. Mary was always perfectly turned out and right up to speed. She was current on her politics, well read and connected.
