J. MURRAY (MURPH) ARNOTT The final 18 has been played. On January 3, 2015, James Murray (Murph) Arnott, at the age of 57, succumbed to his illness with his loving sister Diane at his side. Murray was predeceased by parents Glenn (2005) and Vaughan (2010), with whom he had a special bond. He has now joined them on the eternal golf course where the sun always shines and there are no 3 putts. Murph is survived by his younger sister Diane of Guelph, who shared his love of golf, and his older brother Doug (Janet) of Winnipeg. Murph began life in Winnipeg before moving to Guelph with the family in the mid-1970s. He played all the usual sports but enjoyed volleyball and basketball the most - excelling at both. Although golf was his last love, his first was farming. He absolutely loved farming and anxiously awaited summer vacation so he could go to his grandparents farm at Makaroff, Manitoba. By the time he was in his early teens Murray could operate a tractor and any equipment or implement needed. He even enjoyed picking stones by hand in the hot sun. For Murph time on the farm was far more play than work. And like every farmer, he enjoyed harvest the most occasionally returning from Guelph to help his Uncle Johnny, whom he adored, with the job. Murray wasn't the best student - too much of a free spirit to put up with the routine. His mother was quite relieved when he graduated high school on time. But she was even prouder when he pursued his millwright ticket which Murph went on to use in the employ of Linamar in Guelph until his illness forced him to stop in 2010. He spent the last few years of his life doing what he loved - golfing. The game provided much enjoyment and challenge but most importantly opportunity to share time and laughter with others. Murph's heart was always in the right place and so it is no surprise that he made good friends on and off the course whose company he greatly enjoyed and who supported him throughout his battle. He will be missed by many. Cremation has taken place. When spring comes, and the sun warms the earth, his ashes will be interred in the Makaroff Cemetery so he can lie under the prairie sky with his mother, father, uncle, and grandparents. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to The Canadian Cancer Society in his name. Farewell dear brother. Rest in peace. You will be forever in our hearts. A 19th hole gathering with the family will be held at Victoria East golf course (Guelph) on Saturday, January 10, 2015 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to the GILCHRIST CHAPEL - McIntyre & Wilkie Funeral Home, One Delhi Street, Guelph (519-824-0031) We invite you to leave your memories and donations online at: www.gilchristchapel.com

  • Such sad news to hear of Murray's passing. I had not seen Murray since the 70's, but always remembered his outrageous personality and humour. Was a large part of the success of the Dakota Lakers (Kid-a-DYNOMITE)team and of mine and many other Dakota alumni memories. Never a dull moment when Murray was around or within earshot. You will forever live fondly in our memories. Rest peacefully Murray!!! - Posted by: Keith (Flex) Elder (Friend and Dakota Laker Coach) on: Jan 13, 2015
