IWAN IWANCHUK It is with great sadness and many fond memories that the family of Iwan Iwanchuk announces his passing, on January 5, 2015, at the age of 103. He slipped away peacefully at Holy Family Home after a brief illness. Iwan was predeceased by his dearly loved wife, Jaroslawa, his beloved son, Chrysant, and his brothers Yakim, Petro, and Hrycz. He will be deeply missed by his caring daughter, Christine, loving grandchildren, Andre (Karen), Ilyan (Andrea), and Katrina, and great-grandchildren Nathan and Mya. Iwan was born in Spasiw, Sokal, Ukraine in 1911, to parents Timotei and Chrystyna (née Sheremeta) Iwanczuk. He completed secondary school in Sokal (1931), and his law degree in Lviv (1936). His law career was interrupted when he joined the Ukrainian resistance movement working toward Ukraine's independence, for which he was imprisoned from 1937-1939. The end of the Second World War began Iwan's journey from Ukraine to the West. He and Jaroslawa, with their young son Chrysant, immigrated to Canada. They arrived in January of 1948, and settled in Winnipeg. After arriving in his new home, Iwan worked diligently to support his family as a sewing factory presser at Sterling Stall, and with his wife Jaroslawa operated Iwanchuk's Grocery at their home on Pritchard Avenue. During these years he became actively immersed in his service to the Ukrainian community. He was a founding member of the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM) of Canada, and a founding member of the Canadian League for the Liberation of Ukraine (LVU), an organization over which he presided for 10 years. He was also a founding member of the Vera Credit Union, where he was the manager from 1967 to 1980, and later, a member of its board. Over many years, he held various positions on the Executive of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (KYK). He was an active member of Ukrainian Canadian Institute Prosvita, and a faithful member of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral. In 1971, Iwan was awarded the Shevchenko Medal by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, in recognition for his sustained level of excellence and outstanding contribution to the development of the Ukrainian Canadian community. Iwan will be remembered for his leadership, kindness, fairness, and intelligence. He was a model to others in his willingness to reconcile differences, and remain friends with those with whom he may have disagreed. As he grew older, he increasingly turned his energy to his love and care of his family. He became an excellent cook, baker, and gardener. His devotion and love for his grandchildren and great- grandchildren was returned many times over. The family wishes to thank Dr. T. Babick and Dr. A. Babick and the staff of Holy Family Home for their compassionate and loving care. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 12 at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral, 115 McGregor St., with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow after the service at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (KYK), the Ukrainian Canadian Institute Prosvita, or an organization of the donor's choice. I had several phone conversations with Iwan a few years ago to see if we were related as my family believed. Iwan and I could not establish a link but I enjoyed his stories, especially recollections of his life in Ukraine. My condolences to his family. Dear Ily, Andrij, Christine and family memmbers. We were deeply saddened to hear of yet another loss for the members of the Iwanchuk family. Mr. Iwanchuk will always be remembered as a man of strong convictions, a hard worker, a family man and a true Ukrainian nationalist. Over 103 years, he saw more than many of us will experience in a lifetime. May he rest in peace. Our hearts go out to you at this time of great loss. - Posted by: Paul and Vicki Karpiak (Family) on: Jan 07, 2015
