GILBERT JOSEPH MIGNOT It is with heavy hearts that the family announces that Gilbert Mignot passed away peacefully on January 1, 2015 at Taché Centre. Born Gilbert Joseph Mignot on November 13, 1928 in Prince Albert, SK to René and Augustine (née Mugnier) Mignot. The family moved to Lorette, MB just in time for Gilbert to start school. Growing up Gilbert was always a great help to his father on the farm. At about 19 years of age Gilbert started life on his own, but for many years would miss life on the farm. He had a few odd jobs before joining the C.N.R. where he worked his way across Western Canada to the BC coastline. He was promoted to Telegraph Lineman. Gilbert came back to Manitoba where he worked for Winnipeg Electric as a Power Lineman. He met Denise Saltel at her brother's house where Gilbert was helping Al fix his car. He asked Denise for her phone number and the rest is history. They fell in love, married eight months later on February 4, 1956. In November 1956 Gilbert went up North to work on the DEW (Distant Early Warning) Line during the Cold War for about five months. It was an adventure for him. Returning to Winnipeg and again employed at Winnipeg Electric for another 32 years; greater Winnipeg is now served by Manitoba Hydro. Gilbert and Denise bought a house in St. Vital where they raised their five children. Gilbert will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 58 years, Denise; his daughter, Marianne Mignot (Rick Weins), grandson, Shaun (Melissa) Duguay, eight month old great-granddaughter, Isla, and grandson, James Duguay who is now writing and working his last exams to be a Power Lineman like his grandfather; his daughter, Jeannette (Ron) Peersman and grandson, Coe; son, Paul of Power River, BC; daughter, Jacqueline Mignot; son, Marc and his four grandsons, Trevor, Paul, Robert and Alexander, and great-grandchildren, Alaina and Josiah. Gilbert will also be dearly missed by his sister, Alice, 91 years old of St. Laurent, Québec and his three nieces, nephew, grandniece, grandnephew and one great-grandniece, as well as his brother-in-law, Louis Saltel; many friends and good neighbours whom he talked of fondly when he was still able to do so at Taché Nursing Centre. Gilbert was predeceased by his sister, Renée, infant brother in 1922, brother-in-law, Jos Chabalier, many in-laws and friends. Gilbert loved his work at Hydro, it was a good fit for him; he loved the outdoors. We had many family camping trips where our children would look forward to watching Dad chop wood and make large bonfires at night. After retiring his hobbies included baseball, bowling, skating and volunteering to numerous causes that were close to his heart. He was also an avid geography and history buff who loved keeping up with world events. Gilbert loved his family very dearly. He was a hard worker, good provider and very generous to his family. Dad we love you and will miss you deeply.' Your children I know we will meet again.' Your loving wife, Denise The family would like to thank all the staff on 5AB at Taché Nursing Centre for their excellent care and compassion given to Gilbert in his final days. In keeping with Gilbert's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My deepest condolences to the family. I remember Mr. Mignot coming out to cheer us on and watch his son Paul play goal on our team, the Glenwood Bruins, when I was young. The Mignots would set up the camper for us in the summer to play in and have sleepovers. Mrs. Mignot would always make us pancakes for breakfast the next morning. Mr and Mrs Mignot were always very kind to me. I'm very sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Andy Johnson (Friend of son Paul) on: Jan 26, 2015

  • My dad and Gil were best friends for many years, and I enjoyed friendship with the 3 eldest kids in the family many years ago. One of my sisters was named after Denise, which always illustrated how much Gil & Denise meant to dad. Even when it was difficult for him, Gil would visit my dad at his home in personal care. Great memories of time spent together will be with my dad until the end of his life. God Bless you all at this difficult time. - Posted by: Bill Peters Jr. (Family friend) on: Jan 10, 2015
