RICHARD WILLIAM WARD
Born: Dec 31, 1928
Date of Passing: Jan 01, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRICHARD (DICK) WILLIAM WARD On January 1, 2015, the first day of his 87th year, Dick passed away after a lengthy illness. Dick was born in Winnipeg on December 31, 1928 to Albert and May (Robinson) Ward. He survived polio as a youngster and at age 18, survived a gunshot wound to the chest, the bullet remaining next to his heart for life. In 1949, he married Patricia Chaloner and they settled in West Kildonan, where they had grown up. He started out working at WJ Dick & Co. and after some years he and several co-workers started Central Graphic Reproductions, where he worked until his retirement. Dick was unable to serve in the Second World War, but his big brothers did and he so admired them for it. Their experiences made a huge impression on him and subsequently he became somewhat of an authority on the subject. And football - he loved to play the game with his friends well into adulthood, but he loved his Blue Bombers more. He was their biggest, most faithful fan, and so somewhat of an authority on them too. Dick inherited his artistic abilities from his Dad, Albert, and won several awards for his art in school. His meticulously decorated Christmas trees and windows were the delight of the neighbourhood. He delighted in drawing pictures and making plasticine figures with the children. With his infinite patience and attention to detail, he handcrafted a beautiful leather gun holster any cowboy would have been proud to wear. He designed and built a beautiful deck, patio room and patio table. We loved his amazing devices he created to suit a need. His sense of humour, his easygoing ways will be missed. Left to cherish his memory, his wife of 65 years, Patricia, daughter Patricia (Barry), sons Larry and Glenn; sisters Shirley and Arlo (Norm); six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren whom he adored and gave him such pride, sister-in-law Georgina (Chuck) and many nephews and nieces. In recent years, Dick was predeceased by his brothers Roland and Clifford, his sister Marjorie, his daughter Kimberley, and his grandson Tyler. The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Riverview Health Centre - 3East for their extraordinary care and compassion shown to Dad and our family. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held, but we who love him will celebrate him every day.

Of all of us Dick and I were the closest. Ive always been so proud of him and everything he did. The family joke was the several times I covered for him as we were growing up. Im so thankful I went to see him in Oct and we talked about old times, had some good laughs I still cry when I think of him. I cant believe I cant go back to Wpg and he will be there to hug me and tell me how much he loves me. I will miss him forever - Posted by: SHIRLEY SHANROCK (MIDDLE OF HIS 3 SISTERS) on: Sep 07, 2015

We will always remember you as Ward and Teash. Hank met Ward at 15 and I met him when I was 16. Over fifty years of friendship.I told him that he looked like Clark Gable when I was also hired at WJ Dick. We remember many evenings when we were dating that we would drop in to see Ward working and enjoy his company. What a wonderful person. He talked about many stories including the shot in his chest and his sons making a bath tub full of hot chocolate. We will always cherish these memories. Our thoughts are with you Teash and your family. - Posted by: Hank and Diane Sawatzky (Friends) on: Mar 16, 2015

I first met Ward (he preferred to be called by his last name) back in August of 1958. That was the day I started working at W.J.Dick & Co. Ward was the foreman and of course my boss. Yet somehow he never made that obvious, because he treated everyone with respect and kindness. I truly enjoyed working with him. In 1971 he along with 4 others started a new company, Central Graphics. It was by no means an easy time and he played an important part in that venture and later successes as we grew from a small local company into a Canadian wide entity. I continued to work with him till the day he retired. When I got married in 1965, he made me a beautiful handcrafted wallet as a wedding present. That was the first wallet I ever owned and I treasured it. I never had the nerve to tell him I lost it while travelling on my honeymoon. I'll always regret not having spent more time with him and Teash after his retirement. I'm proud to have been his friend and will miss him. - Posted by: Dieter Schmidt (Friend and Co-worker) on: Mar 11, 2015

Dr. Ward is being and will always be remembered at the other end of the world. We, his Turkish students, have excellent memories of him. His invaluable help and support during our most demanding times when we were working on our Ph.D. at Sam Houston State will never be forgotten. We have learned a lot from him as a professor and a former law enforcement officer. He is still in our hearts and minds. We extend our most sincere condolences to his beloved family and the loved ones. - Posted by: IRFAN DEMIR (FORMER STUDENT) on: Feb 21, 2015

I have just learned of Dick's passing today. I had not seen him for many years, but I worked with him for 2 decades. He was always a friendly person to be around and got along with everyone. We had many conversations about the Bombers. His attention to detail in his work was always to be admired. Best wishes to his family. - Posted by: Mark Beakley (co-worker) on: Jan 30, 2015

There are so many memories: My first meeting “Uncle Dick” and the rest of the Ward family when I was 3 -- 60 years ago now. The wood plaque he made for Bus (Dad) in 1949, passed on by Macrina (Mom) to Laurie and me on our 5th anniversary -- it still hangs in our kitchen. My 6-foot Spider-Man poster which he insisted I allow him to mount -- it now adorns a wall in our office. The many years of Bus and Dick attending Bombers’ games together with their season tickets. Dick and Macrina enjoying what she called “off-color” jokes -- he had such a wonderful laugh. And on and on ... I will miss him forever! - Posted by: Murray Ward (nephew) on: Jan 16, 2015

Sending much love to all of you! I will always cherish my memories with him. One is particular that stands out during my last visit so many years ago was his slapping his leg and rocking out to Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline. I have thought of him every time I hear that song since. He was, is and always will be a fabulous man! Love to you all! XOXOXOXO - Posted by: Robyn (Andrews) Blankenship (niece) on: Jan 13, 2015

My thoughts are with your family, may you all keep the memories close to your heart. I worked with Dick for many many years, he was a great mentor and a great man that was well liked by everyone. Full of words of wisdom for the young 18 year old that I was, that I've held on to, to this day . He will be missed. - Posted by: Marianne Gobeil (Co-worker) on: Jan 11, 2015
