Ed & Penny were the best neighbors and we became good friends. Our backyards met with only a chain link fence between them. We had many, many conversations under the apple tree. We were very sorry when they moved to Vancouver Island and missed them very much. We continued to stay in touch. I remember when Ed retired, he worked at Salvation Army in Winnipeg. He was always a gentleman. I am so very sorry for Penny's loss. We still keep in touch with Penny and miss her very, very much. - Posted by: John, Judy, Jocelyn Silva (Friends and neighbor in Winnipeg) on: Jan 13, 2023

Somehow my folks came across your Dad's obituary and asked if this was Guy's father. I'm sorry for your loss, although it's been years since your Dad's passing, I'd like to pass on my condolences. From what I remember, your Dad was a very stoic man and always friendly towards me. All the best to you Guy, and of course your lovely mother and sister and family. - Posted by: Lise (Lepine) Munro (Past acquaintance of Guy ) on: Aug 09, 2017

Saddened to learn of Ed's passing. I met Ed years before becoming a member of WPS and had the honour of working with him and for him over the years. A true example of the way a professional police officer should look and act, the "POPE" was respected by co-workers and bad guys alike. Condolences to the family. Ed's love and care for all animals will be remembered fondly. He and his beautiful wife Penny welcomed all dogs into their lovely home on Vancouver Island, and Ed's gentle nature while "babysitting" elderly or special medical needs dogs earned the trust and respect of many in the Oceanside area. He will be greatly missed by all... - Posted by: martha and todd howe (friends) on: Feb 03, 2015

We lost another good one. Ed truly had "The right stuff". Although I never had the pleasure of working with Ed while with the WPD I became friends with him when him and Penny settled here in Qualicum Beach, B.C. We were also comrades at our Local Legion #76. Penny, I will be attending the service this Saturday in Parksville. My sincere condolences to all members of ED's family. - Posted by: Ron Truesdale (A friend and former WPD member) on: Jan 12, 2015

In the era when Ed Popiel and I attended Winnipeg Police 'Recruit' Training, a lecture was given on the subject 'Discipline, Deportment and Attitude.' A lot of examples were given regarding same, but at the end of the lecture it was said that if one had the 'right attitude' then self-discipline would dictate how you behave and present yourself in a respectful manner. Ed Popiel had the right attitude. - Posted by: R. D. (Dick) Hickling (Colleague - Winnipeg Police ( 1960 to 1987 )) on: Jan 11, 2015

Ed was my first Patrol Sergeant when I started the job working in District #4 at the Transcona police station. I remember him as a patient, attentive supervisor who would take the time to ensure we all understood our roles. Our nickname for him was "Smilin 'Ed" mostly due to the fact he was almost always smiling and seemed to enjoy the work. I bumped into him years later when he was helping out at the Salvation Army downtown, and he had hardly changed. He was a respected colleague who I am proud to have had the privilege to work with and know. My deepest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Al Caron (Friend/Colleague) on: Jan 10, 2015
