HELEN DRYSDALE (nee CHENKIE) Peacefully on January 5, 2015, Helen Drysdale (nee Chenkie) passed away at the age of 84 at home in Stony Mountain on the farm she loved. Our mother was born on June 26, 1930 in East Selkirk, the fifth child of John and Catherine Chenkie. Mom had a wonderful childhood with her seven siblings on the farm where she learned to cherish the land and the flowers that grow on it. Helen often spoke with great fondness of her school days at Happy Thought School that instilled in her a thirst for learning. She married Wallace Drysdale on November 4, 1950. Together they raised 10 children on the family fur farm. Mom loved her children, long walks with her husband and the family dog, Diggie and later with a second canine companion, Bruno. She loved to read, to solve crossword puzzles and to think deep thoughts. She loved her garden, needlework, potatoes and America's Got Talent. Most importantly, Mom never tired of listening to her children and her grandchildren - their triumphs and their trials. Talking to Mom always made everything right. Helen was predeceased by her much loved husband, Wallace in 2002, her parents John and Catherine, her sister Mary Linklater, and her brothers, Peter, Mike and Bill. Mom's memory will be cherished by her children: Linda Sexsmith (Douglas), Karen Ellis, Wallace (Betty), Terry (Janet), Ken (Rosalie), Ron (Shelley), Diana, Kathy (Tim Woods), Barbara and Laurie Campbell (Henry); her 19 grandchildren: Jennifer, Clayton, Ernest, Marcus, Derek, Alex, Chelsie, John, Matthew, John Adam, Andrew, Ashley, Holly, Evan, Jackson, Samantha, Alex, Nick and Seth; her two great-grandchildren: Jackson and Nicklas, and her siblings: Sophie Peterson (Peter), John Cienki (Coreen) and Janet Voyer (George). In keeping with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. "She walk[ed] in beauty, like the night" - Lord Byron

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Me and my grandma were such good friends. Me and her always laughed with each other and smiled. When she passed I did't even know what to say. "My best friend is gone" I thought to myself. When I was little I always used to call her "mama" Cause she was like a second mother to me. All the time when school went out I always said to my mom "please can I go to gramma's" and she always said yes. She is in a better place. I Love her. - Posted by: Seth (Granmma) on: Feb 07, 2015
