NICHOLAS BIELAK On Monday, January 12 2015, our dearest father, Nick passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Left to cherish Nick's beautiful memory are his four children Ken (Dolores), Pat, Jerry (Barbara) and Teresa. Dad's greatest joy was being a loving Dido to Michael (Mika) of Pullman, WA, Allison (Mark and great-granddaughter Bridget) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Nyk of New York, NY and Zachary of Toronto, ON. Nick was very proud of each of their accomplishments and took great interest in all of their endeavors. Also mourning his loss is his brother Myron (Judy) and family, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Nick was predeceased by his beloved wife Julia in December 2010 after 59 years of marriage, the unexpected passing of their son Eugene in May 2010, parents Peter and Anne, brother Sylvester, sisters Rose and Victoria. Nick was born on December 15, 1924 in Winnipeg and attended Margaret Scott, Faraday and Isaac Newton schools. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and returned home in November 1944. Dad was trained as an upholsterer and carpenter and took great pride in the skills and workmanship that he developed. Many of his projects are a testament to his craftsmanship as each project is being used to this day. In his spare time, Dad had a fulltime job with Canada Post retiring in December 1986 after 25 years of dedicated service. Nick and Julia met at a youth club dance and were joyfully married in July 1951. Together they began their lifelong devotion to family and the church community at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church. Nick was a member of the parish all his life. His involvement with the church included the youth club, choir, parish council and men's club. For many years Nick was president of the bingo committee. Dad was by Mom's side to initiate the perogy committee as a parish fund raiser which continues to this day. His efforts and support were unwavering in every way. Dad was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Josaphat's Council and the 4th Degree in the Canon Luhowy Assembly for over 59 years. For many years Nick was responsible for the Blue Bomber raffle tickets as part of their fund raising efforts. Nick was also a representative for St. Nicholas Mutual for many years and made many long time friends. In 1976, Nick and Julia became involved in the St. Vladimir's College Parent's Committee and enjoyed participating in the various fund raising efforts. For several years Nick organized the annual caroling for students and alumni. Nick was a man of strong faith and was devoted to the church community all of his life. This devotion was passed on to his family and will be his legacy. Dad was a kind, gentle and loving father and grandfather who always displayed unconditional love for his family. Dad, you are loved and will be in our hearts forever. Rosary will be said by the Knights of Columbus at 7:00 p.m. Prayers will be sung at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, January 18 at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Ave. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 19 also at the church with Fr. V. Bashutskyy officiating. Interment will follow in Glen Eden Cemetery. Special thank you to Dr. D. Haligowski, Dr. T. Babick and the caring, compassionate staff of Maples Personal Care Home and all the Home Care workers over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations to the building fund of Blessed Virgin Mary Church are greatly appreciated. Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright Sleep in Heavenly Peace.
