GEORGE JERSAK August 15, 1936 - January 12, 2015 He is survived by his wife Minota of 56 years; son Paul; granddaughters Erin (Andrew) Thomas, Jamie (Duane) Mondor; great-grandchildren Taylor-Leigh, Adalynn and Jaxen Mondor, as well as his two brothers Lloyd (Irene) and Henry (Florence) along with their respective families. Brother-in-law Keith MacKay (Berenice), sisters-in-law Beverley with their respective families and Donna. He was predeceased by his father Jerry (1970), mother Emilie (2006), son Glen (1996), father-in-law Ernest MacKay (1977), mother-in-law Lorna MacKay (1997), cousins-in-law Bunny and Eleanor Waterman and Marilyn Paquette, and many relatives in the Czech Republic. He was born in the Swan River area and moved to Winnipeg to attend University. Upon marrying Minota in 1958, they moved to Alberta for five years. He had been involved as a teacher, elder, deacon, airport chaplain and counselor throughout his church life. He started out as a teacher, then was in school administration with St. Vital School Division as Principal at St. George Elementary School, Vice-principal at Norberry Junior High School, Principal at Dakota Collegiate and H.S. Paul Elementary School until his retirement. After retirement, he and Minota went to the Czech Republic to teach English as a Second Language for a little more than a year. They came back to Winnipeg to provide care for their ill son until his death. Wanting to live a productive life, George then went to Minnedosa Collegiate for two and a half years as Principal. Prior to his death he taught Biology, Science and Math at Horizons Adult Learning Centre. He taught a Bible Study Class at Union Gospel Mission and then organized a quartet to sing before he said grace for the lunch meal once a month. He was one of the Chaplains at the Airport on Saturday as often as his health would allow. In facing various life challenges he was often heard to say "This too shall pass", or "Don't sweat the small stuff". His greatest delight was to see his family, friends, students and staff succeed. He wished us to thank all the Dialysis staff, the doctors, nurses, friends and family who helped him through the passage from this world into Glory. A memorial service will be celebrated at Grant Memorial Church, 877 Wilkes Ave, in Winnipeg on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers you are encouraged to donate to your favourite charity or Grant Memorial's Missions Fund. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • Paul I am so very sorry to hear of your dad's passing. You are in my prayers. - Posted by: Eileen Marie (friend of Paul) on: Apr 07, 2015

  • George is great! He is positive, humble, thoughtful, kind and humorous. George and his Jersak family warmly hosted me many times, and offered me much generous assistance when I was in Winnipeg or even after I returned back to China. I also acquired many interesting stories about his family adventures from Czech to Canada from George. These inspiring stories are still fresh in my mind. May Lord grant George peace and happiness in the Heaven. - Posted by: Yunzhi Zou (Joe) (Friend) on: Jan 22, 2015

  • George was a kind, humble and thoughtful individual who made a lasting impact with any and every person he met. As a teacher, administrator and educator, he was peerless. I, and many other teachers owe a great debt of gratitude to George. He will be missed. - Posted by: Bill Zuk (Colleague) on: Jan 17, 2015

  • George was a most wonderful colleague. As a young Principal, he helped me to appreciate the complexities of the role. We both worked with colleagues to open brand new schools in the fall of 1989: Harry Paul School (later renamed H.S. Paul School...and we both chuckled about the reason for th name change that I suggested to him!!) and Collège Jeanne-Sauvé. George continued to be a dear colleague in the former St. Vital School Division No. 6. He was a talented teacher, expert school administrator, and someone who based all of his decisions on what was right for children. After his retirement, we kept in touch. I remember his strength during his son's illness. I remember how he believed in the power of his family and his faith. RIP dear George. Thank you for your service to the children, the young people, and the parents of the former St. Vital School Division. You were a mentor to me George! I extend my very deepest sympathy to your family. Adieu George... - Posted by: Terry Borys (Retired Superintendent St. Vital / Louis Riel School Division ) on: Jan 16, 2015

  • George was the heart beat of Dakota Collegiate. He was the most gracious gentleman that I have ever worked with. We had a regular joke exchange during some of our lunch hours. I think I shocked him and caught him off guard a few times. After the shock sunk in, he would laugh so hard. That laughter is embedded into my brain. May the family kmow that he was loved by many co-workers. An angel with a great smile, he will certainly be. Take care dear George. - Posted by: Dianne McShane (Worked with him at Dakota Collegiate and the Board Office (St. Vital School Division)) on: Jan 16, 2015

  • My condolences to the George Jersak family. Mr. Jersak was my favourite teacher (Biology) at Glenlawn Collegiate back in the late 1960's. His kindness was what made him so special and forever remembered. - Posted by: Geraldine Dring nee Taylor (Student) on: Jan 15, 2015

  • It has been our privilege and pleasure to know and fellowship with George and Minota for over 5 decades. The special weekly luncheons with George and 3 other friends will never be forgotten. George was truly a Godly man, thinking far more of others than himself. I have had the joy of working in church activities, committees, boards and Sunday School over many years with George. Our families grew up together. WHAT PLEASANT MEMORIES WE HAVE. Our prayers are with the family. With warmest love, Doug & Doreen Hindmarsh - Posted by: Doreen & Doug Hindmarsh (Longtime friends.) on: Jan 15, 2015
