ROSE-MARIE TRUDEL Rose-Marie Marguerite Trudel passed away on January 8, 2015 at the Taché Centre. She was born on November 3, 1934 in St. Boniface, MB to Margherita Chevrier Trudel and Dr. Jean-Joseph Trudel. Rose-Marie was sister to André, Robert, Hubert, Solange, Valérie and Louise. Rose-Marie married Hubert Préfontaine in 1955 and together they had five children: son Hubert (who died as an infant), and daughters Lorraine, Denise, Nicole and Yvonne. Rose-Marie later married Clem Peppel and had another daughter, Michelle. Although she trained as a teacher, Rose-Marie spent her career as a mother, volunteer, and library technician, amongst other activities. She was a keen student of history and proudly traced her lineage to the earliest peoples and settlers of Canada. She truly loved preserving the family history, something she learned from her mother Rita and shared with her brother Hubert and sister Louise. Rose-Marie passed her appreciation for this rich heritage on to her children and grandchildren. This ancestry ranged from coureurs de bois and fur traders to civic and community leaders, including one of the City of Winnipeg's founding fathers, as well as the first MLA to speak Cree in the Manitoba Legislature, and a suffragette who participated in the 1913 Freedom March for women's rights. Rose-Marie had a variety of other interests, foremost were sewing and needlework; her daughters treasure the many items she made for them and for their children in turn. An avid reader, Rose-Marie especially enjoyed reading historical fiction, as well as the newspaper. Like her mother before her, she was always ready with her newspaper clippers, sure to preserve and pass on any article that would be of interest to others. Rose-Marie was a skilled speed-skater in her youth, travelling across Canada and the United States to compete, often winning competitions and receiving awards. Rose-Marie was also fond of the arts, having grown up in a home where literature and theatre were passions. Poetry and prose were often recited after dinner. The family was an integral part of Le Cercle Molière's activities, and as a young girl Rose-Marie enjoyed performing on stage in 'Un chapeau de paille d'Italie'. Rose-Marie went to great lengths to provide cultural opportunities for her own children. Even while a single parent, she found the time and money to see that her daughters could attend art exhibitions, live theatre, and varied cultural events. Above all, Rose-Marie gave her daughters an appreciation for the beauty and blessings in simple things and in small gestures of kindness. Rose-Marie will be deeply missed by her daughters, sons-in-law Tim, Colin, Bruce, Duane and Jim, grandchildren Morgan, Erica, Zoé, Chloé, Graham, and Luc, as well as other family and friends. She will be remembered for her sincere, unassuming manner and her kind and gentle spirit. Rose-Marie will be laid to rest in the St. Boniface Cathedral Cemetery, alongside her parents, sister Louise, and her daughter Yvonne. Many thanks to the caring and compassionate staff at Taché Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in remembrance to the Manitoba Historical Society or to Action Marguerite (Taché Centre).

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Chère famille Trudel Prefontaine Peppel. Please accept our sincere sympathy on the loss of your mother and sister. I was a close friend of her sister Louise , who grew up down the street from this interesting lively family and enjoyed many happy times at 204 Lawndale, especially Reveillons on Christmas Eve. Singing and theatre readings with lots of laughs made for lifelong fond memories. Rose was the vibrant, sweet, popular, athletic, very pretty, older sister to Louise who we all admired, and secretly envied for all the handsome suitors who were vying to get her attention. She finally smiled on Hubert, and she became a wonderful homemaker. Later she was proud of her daughter that she and Clem welcomed. She loved all her daughters deeply, and the loss of Yvonne was especially painful for her. However, she was a strong lady and accepted and overcame life's challenges with grace. She spoke often of the kindness she received from her children. She truly appreciated your love, that gave her enhanced quality of life. May you be blessed for your devotion to her. She is now reunited with our loving Creator and her dear family. - Posted by: Elsie and Gilbert d'Eschambault (Friend) on: Jan 19, 2015
