EDWIN ERNEST LAURILA Ed passed away peacefully January 6, 2015 at Misericordia Place. Ed was known by many names, Big Ed at the CNR, Chief in the Navy, Uncle Ed to nieces and nephews, Pops to the grandkids and of course Dad. He was born April 8, 1932 in Meadow Portage to Hjalmar and Lily Laurila. Dad was very proud of his hard work ethic and Finnish heritage. He grew up in Pointe du Bois and worked at several of the power plants along the Winnipeg River system. He worked for the Canadian National Railway Transcona Shops, in Manufacturing as a Carman and First Aid Instructor. He took his First Aid Teams to many championship wins.He proudly served his country in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer and was awarded the Canadian Decoration. Dad was also a Mason and long time Royal Canadian Legion member. He won many cribbage tournaments in the Legion and represented Manitoba nationally. After retiring from the CNR he began his new career with the Commissionaires. Dad was an avid sports fan and in his younger years played hockey and was a Heavy Weight Boxer. Later in life his sports were curling and golf. Ed is survived by his son Mark Laurila (Kathy), daughters Beverley Laurila, Lorraine Lagimodiere (Bill), grandchildren Jamie, Charlie, Chris, Aaron, Nicole, seven great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Liz Laurila and many nieces and nephews. A man of great skill, strength and humour has left this world and will be sadly missed. We love you Dad. A private family service will take place at a later date.
