AMJAD MIAN It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Amjad Mian, with family by his side, on January 12, 2015 at the age of 61. Amjad leaves behind his two daughters Noreen and Leila, his former wife Heather and an extended family of nieces and nephews. Amjad was born in Lahore, Pakistan and was the eleventh of 12 children. Amjad shared a special bond with his brother Salim and joined him in Winnipeg in 1970. Amjad was a proud alumni of Kelvin High School and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Engineering where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. He had recently retired from Manitoba Hydro after 39 years. He began his career working in the Brandon office and soon moved to Gillam to work as a Plant Engineer in the DC converter stations and hydraulic generating stations. For most of his career, Amjad was Manitoba Hydro's Corporate Fire Prevention Engineer for the province and was a recognized expert in this field. At work and in his personal life, Amjad was known for his generous spirit. He loved to spend time fixing anything he could for his family, friends and neighbours. He was an avid gardener and also loved to travel. In recent years, Amjad enjoyed his time volunteering at the Riverview Health Centre. Amjad will be missed by his family, his friends and the large network of colleagues and friends at Manitoba Hydro. Thank you Rick and Jan Bartley for your tremendous support and friendship and to Dr. Hochman, Dr. Dawe, Dr. St. Godard, the St. Boniface Hospital palliative and home care team, for their kindness and excellent care. Thank you also to the Manitoba Islamic Association volunteers for funeral preparations. As per his wishes, a private funeral service was held on January 14. In lieu of flowers, donations in Amjad's memory can be made to the Winnipeg Foundation.

  • Dear Noreen, Leila, and Family; I apologize for sending this note so long after Amjad's passing. I only just learned this sad news today 2/26/2016. I met Amjad in the early 90's at our NFPA 851 meetings, and we hit it off immediately. Such a kind soul, always happy to see me, always ready to help. We shared many dinners during technical committee weeks. The meeting that Amjad organized in Quebec City remains my favorite work trip of all time. When I edited the power plant chapter of the NFPA Handbook in 2008, Amjad was instrumental in providing photos and technical review for the hydro material. And we had fun doing it. It was always fun working with Amjad. A great sense of humor! Although it was always many months between our meetings, I miss him greatly after hearing of his passing. Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. Sincerely, Dan Sheridan, Saugatuck, MI. • It was so upsetting to see that Amjad had passed away. As well as helping me on numerous projects at work Amjad had comforted me and checked on me frequently after my son passed away six years ago. He was such a kind soul. I remember him telling me he volunteered at Riverview feeding old people in his spare time. I will never forget him or his kindness. My sincere condolences to his daughters and the rest of his family. My heart is with you. - Posted by: Joan Anderson (Friend and co-worker) on: Feb 07, 2015

  • We had not considered the possibility of Amjad's untimely Passing. We are deeply saddened. Amjad and I worked together in the Northern Generating Stations around Gillam, MB for a number of years. It was not long that we found Amjad to be one of the nicest and gentlest People we had met. He was great to work with. Considerate, helpful and always friendly and polite. My regret is not having kept better contact. To the Family; please let us share some of Your Sorrow. • Sincere condolences to the Mian family. I experienced his professional passion and knowledge first hand whenever our paths crossed from the many times we met at various locations in Diesel Maintenance and in Power Supply. Such an upbeat fellow who always had a smile and greeting for everyone he met. I truly believe that Amjad has left a legacy within MB Hydro and had positively impacted numerous individuals such as myself throughout his career inside and outside the Corporation. • My heart sank when I heard of Amjad's passing. Another beautiful soul taken from us so soon. Amjad was always so pleasant at work and remembered anything I told him about my family. Anyone who speaks of Amjad shares the same feelings of his genuine sincerity. Such a gentle spirit and kind man. I loved his laugh. He told many stories of his "crazy" life in Gillam and the people that he hung around with. He is in good hands now and condolences to Amjad's family. Our wish for your family is that the wonderful memories you made with Amjad live in your hearts forever. There is no more suffering for Amjad now. - Posted by: Wendy Krupnik (Work aquaintences) on: Jan 22, 2015

  • I had the honor of working with Amjad for 20 years in Mechanical Engineering here at Manitoba Hydro. He always had a smile and was quick to laugh at a good joke. Amjad had the most amazing memory of people, places and facts. So good was his memory that I would often joke to him that he should write a book. I, along with many of others at hydro, will miss him dearly. We will meet up again my brother and you can show me that completed book. Condolences to all his family & friends. - Posted by: Michael C. • My sincere condolences to Mian's family for the loss of a great man and a father. I met Amjad when I joined Manitoba Hydro and worked with him first in a committee that operated under the MH professional engineers' association's direction. Amjad was full of great ideas and provided the newly hired engineers encouraging tips and directions when things seem to come to a halt. He was also a great engineer and as a fire protection engineer he had to be accurate and meticulous, fulfilling his duty of protecting life. He held his position in that committee until last year and kept the committee going. He was a great citizen and a colleague and for sure he will be missed by all in Manitoba Hydro. - Posted by: Hamid Zahedi (Coworker) on: Jan 20, 2015

  • I met Amjad in 1985 working at Kettle GS. He was a truly upbeat guy and we always stopped and chatted over the years whenever our paths crossed. Sad to hear of his passing, I will miss him. - Posted by: Ray Whalley (coworker) on: Jan 17, 2015

  • What a blessing it was to know Amjad since moving into the house right across his in Lindenwoods. He embodied the meaning of friendliness, generosity, kindness, consideration, joy, faith, selflessness, and purity of heart. He went out of the way to be of service to others, and when he got ill, all he asked for were prayers in return. Noreen and Leila, we hold your father close in our hearts, and our lives are truly blessed to have had him in it. In love and in light, forever in our hearts. - Posted by: Giovanna Rossing (Family Friend) on: Jan 17, 2015

  • Dear Noreen, Leila, and Family: I am so, so sorry for your loss. I recently shared some of my favorite memories of your father with Leila. His amazing sense of humor, his kind soul, his big, infectious smile, and of course his laugh. He had that great, booming laugh. And whenever he laughed, everyone couldn't help but join in. My childhood is filled with memories that wouldn't be the same without Mr. Mian and the rest of the family. I'm heartbroken for your loss. Please take comfort knowing he left this world a better place. We are better people for having known him. He will be so missed by all of us. Sending lots of love your way! - Posted by: Stephanie Kloos (Family Friend) on: Jan 17, 2015
