DOUGLAS GORDON LUNNEY It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doug Lunney, aged 81 years, of Arnes, MB, at Gimli Community Health Centre on January 12, 2015. Doug will be missed by his three children, JoAnne Nelson (Dave), Kevin (Shauna) and Doug Jr. (Ashley), as well as his three grandchildren, Steven Nelson, Beverley Lunney and Maslen Lunney. Doug was predeceased by his mother Kathleen (Kay) Lunney (Agnew) and his father William (Bill) Lunney, as well as his second wife, Burnice (Sinclair), in 2008. Doug was born September 27, 1933 and raised in Winnipeg, attending high school at Kelvin. He worked in sales with Stephens Paints, before moving to the paper business with E.B. Eddy and Crown Zellerbach. Doug married Connie Moffat in 1956 and they raised their family in East Kildonan before moving to Cooks Creek in 1977, where they enjoyed a hobby farm of 20 acres. Doug always supported his sons' hockey careers and was equally proud of JoAnne's achievements with her horses and dogs. His caring ways and sense of humour later made him a very popular grampa. As he neared retirement, Doug married his second wife, Burnice, in 1989 and the two soon made their cottage in Bayshore Heights their permanent home. Doug loved the Gimli area and was a devoted member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 182, Gimli. Doug also formed many lasting friendships through his years with the Khartum Shriners drum corps. Doug's family would like to thank the Shriners and the many friends he had in the Gimli community who helped make his retirement years so special. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, January 21 in Winnipeg at 2:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Highway. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 0K6.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I am the granddaughter of Gil and Beverly Arnal, who for many years lived across the street from Doug and Bernice. They were both like second grandparents to me and though my family moved to Calgary when I was younger, I always made sure to stop by and visit with them. I was lucky to have the chance to surprise Doug last summer. It was great to catch up and share a few laughs as always. He was my inspiration to play the trombone which led me down great some great paths and opportunities. I will miss him greatly. I would love the chance to pay my respects. If you could let me know where his final resting place is that would be lovely. My email is dyakowchuk@hotmail.com thank you - Posted by: Dawn Arnal (Friend ) on: Aug 19, 2015

  • Your Dad was a special man. I was fortunate to be able to enjoy Doug's sense of humour and his addictive personality throughout my years at Crown Zellerbach in Winnipeg. I especially remember the fishing trips to NW Ontario that he took part in, and the amount of laughs we had together. I still manage to tell some of his stories, from over the years, and they bring back so many great memories. We were all very fortunate to be able to be around him at some point. He will be missed. - Posted by: David L. Robertson (Friend and work mate) on: Jan 19, 2015

  • Dear Joanne and family. I was very sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. I just spoke to Doug when he called to offer his condolences on the passing of my husband Louie. Doug was such a gentle and kind man and I will miss our efforts to keep in touch. I like to think he is having a great reunion with Louie burnice Anne and Andy. His last conversation with me was "let's not lose contact with each other'. Once again my prayers and thoughts are with you all. If you have sometime I would like to hear from you. I have included my phone number and email. Take care. Wanda Perozik. - Posted by: Wanda perozik ( In law) on: Jan 18, 2015
