GEORGE DAVID VOYER
Date of Passing: Jan 13, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE DAVID VOYER Peacefully on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 13, 2015, George Voyer passed away at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. George was predeceased by his parents, George Antoine Voyer and Catherine Mae Voyer (nee Barclay); his brothers, Arthur (Edythe) and Barclay; and niece Beverly Barton. George is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janet, son Graeme, sister-in-law Jean Voyer, and numerous nieces and nephews both on his and his wife's side of the family. There are also sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law on his wife's side. George was born in Winnipeg on June 18, 1924, and resided in this city throughout his life. He started work as a junior office clerk with the Canadian Wheat Board. He then worked as a bookkeeper and subsequently as an accountant for several different Winnipeg businesses. Despite coping with some health challenges, he derived joy from several hobbies and interests. A lifelong student of history, he earned a post-secondary degree from the University of Winnipeg as a mature student in the early 1970s. George was a gifted artist, working with pen and ink and pencil. He loved opera, spending many Saturday afternoons listening to the broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was also a sports fan, watching the NHL, CFL, MLB and PGA. He enjoyed doing the crossword puzzle in the Winnipeg Free Press every day for years. George attended church throughout his life; most recently he was a member of St. Mary's Road United Church, although unable to attend in later years. An unassuming man, he was always a gentleman. He had an amazing ability for remembering names. And above all else, he was a devoted family man. As George wished, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place, and interment will follow at a family ceremony in the spring, conducted by Rev. Alice Szemok. Our thanks to Dr. Fotti and Dr. Boroditsky; to the medical staff and health care aides during his three month stay at Seven Oaks Hospital; and to all staff at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg for their compassionate care these past three weeks. Flowers gratefully declined, but if anyone so chooses, a donation may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 0R3. George could still recite poetry learned in earlier years. Following are a few lines from a favourite poem. The curfew tolls the knell of parting day, The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea, The plowman homeward plods his weary way, And leaves the world to darkness and to me. Full many a gem of purest ray serene The dark unfathom'd caves of ocean bear: Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, And waste its sweetness on the desert air. I was a little boy when Janet brought George home to her parents for the first time and remember how he brought happiness to the family. George continued to pass on good knowledge and wisdom to all of us. I'll always remember his easygoing demeanor and his willingness for good banter on most any subject. We'll miss you George. Bless you !! - Posted by: Gordon & Charlene Chenkie (Nephew) on: Jan 18, 2015
