MARY GUSTAFSON It is with deep sadness the family has to announce the passing of Mary Gustafson (nee Kowalchuk) on January 11, 2015 at the age of 86. Mary was born July 10, 1928 in Dauphin, MB. She was predeceased by her infant son: Ronald, husband: Roy, mother: Jenny, and grandson: Kurt. She leaves to mourn her sons, Robert (Jane) and Ken (Barb), grandsons, David (Suzanne), Brian (Tania), Brett (Sara), and six great-grandchildren. Mary had witnessed a lot in her life, growing up in a farming community during the Great Depression and through the Second World War. In 1944, Mary met the love of her life, an Air Force serviceman stationed in Dauphin named Roy Gustafson and they were married in 1945. Mary and Roy were blessed with three sons, Robert, Ronald and Ken. In their early years of marriage Roy and Mary, with their sons, were transferred around with Chrysler Canada before settling in Winnipeg in 1967. Throughout her life, she was a very caring and compassionate lady with a deep devotion to her family and her church and was proud of her ethnic roots. She was a stay at home mom, and there was always fresh wash on the line and something cooking on the stove. She loved to entertain and was always ready to host the Friday After 5 crew and enjoyed it when everyone could get together for Sunday dinners. In her spare time, she was happiest browsing the many stores looking for that unique item or gift. Mary also enjoyed spending time with Ken and his family at their cottage, witnessing the sunsets after spending the day on the dock. In her later years she was able to travel with family to Phoenix where she was able to enjoy a whole new shopping experience. It was her favourite place to visit. Her last trip took her to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon which she stroked off her bucket list. In her later years, when her health started to fade she showed immeasurable strength and courage. The family would like to thank Elizabeth and the staff at Riverside Lions where Mary unfortunately did not get to spend much time but was looked after with kindness and compassion. Also there are not enough praises or kind words to say to all of the health care professionals and staff that looked after Mom through the years, they are the true heroes of our society. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. A family service was held on Friday, January 16 at Chapel Lawn. Mom, you will be greatly missed.
