LORNA GERALDINE BATY Sadly in the early morning of January 29, surrounded by her children, our beautiful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lorna Geraldine Baty (nee Law) left us. We were truly blessed to have had her in our lives for so long and will miss her terribly. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Peggy (Dennis), Doug (Lisa) and Janet (Michael); her nine grandchildren Cameron, Melonie, John, Denise, Kevin, Deanna, Damien, Somir and Sarah; her 12 great-grandchildren Ruby, Lane, Henry, Brock, Maddox, Loren, Eva, Tyler, Emily, Lilly, Max and Charlotte; her brothers Chuck (Eileen) and George; her sisters-in-law Maureen, Grace and Louise and brothers-in-law Alan (Pat) and David (Laura). There to greet her in heaven were her beloved husband Jim; parents Charles and Aureen; brothers Delbert, Ron, Jim and Howard; sister Janet; brothers-in-law George Shead and George Baty and sisters-in-law Edna, Betty and Susan Law. Lorna was born December 18, 1928 in Winnipeg, the eldest daughter in a family of eight children. In her teen years the family moved to Selkirk. It was there that she met and then married Jim Baty in 1948. They moved to Winnipeg and together raised their family in the North End staying in the family home for over 50 years until illness forced their move to Concordia Village II. In addition to raising her children, Lorna was very active in the community and her children's activities. She was involved in Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, the Altar Guild at St. Barnabas Anglican Church as well as working part-time at Eaton's and then later with the Manitoba Fisheries. Lorna was an excellent cook and renowned for her baking. She was never happier than when all the family was together enjoying her wonderful dinners followed by a lively game of cards. There was no doubt that her family was her first priority. Becoming a grandmother was her greatest joy. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with them and had a precious relationship with each and every one of them. They all adored her. She and Jim loved the outdoors and instilled that same love in their children. They spent many fun-filled years camping and fishing with Lorna winning many a fishing derby prize. In retirement they travelled throughout Canada, the United States, England, Scotland and Europe and enjoyed several cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean and Panama. Lorna will be remembered as a loving wife, caring mother and grandmother, and a good and faithful friend to many. The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Kuegle for his care of Lorna all these years, Concordia Village II staff and friends and a special thank you to her dear friend and stylist for over 20 years, Jarvis Yasinski. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Lorna's name to a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family interment. A memorial service will be held Friday, February 6 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk, MB followed by a light luncheon at St. Clements Parish Hall. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Rest in peace Gram. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. Each visit you made to the states was never a dull one in the least. You had a spark inside that rivaled most firework display finales, and a love for your family that was truly touching. Your next of kin have all welcomed me into this family with open arms and respect, a trait I know was passed down from you and Jim. Sarah and I will always be thankful for that. Whenever Wheel of Fortune is on I'll make sure and try to solve the next puzzle for you and whenever I sit down at the dinner table, I promise I'll take the hat I'm wearing right off! My condolences to Sarah, Janet and the rest of Lorna's family and friends alike. - Posted by: Todd Anderson (Grandson in law) on: Feb 05, 2015

  • Sorry to hear about your mom's passing, Peggy. You often spoke of playing cards....now I know where that came from. You look so much like her in her younger picture. Take care and maybe we'll meet up someday. Florence - Posted by: florence and bernie kisiloski () on: Feb 05, 2015

  • May Peace be with you and your family at this sad time. - Posted by: LInda Bonneteau (nee Marino) (Sister to Steve Marino who was a long time friend of Doug's and neighbours on Redwood Ave.) on: Feb 04, 2015

  • My sincere condolences extended to the family of Lorna. You probably don't know me, but your Mom & I had a brief but special relationship. I was her nurse at one time and although communication was a challenge at times, we were still able to share feelings, argue, joke and enjoy each other's company. She loved her family, and spoke highly of all of them. She told me that she missed her husband terribly and that she was hoping that one day they'd be together again. I'm sure that God has looked after this reunion. May that be of comfort to you at this difficult time. I'm sorry that I didn't have a chance to say goodbye to her. She will be missed.
