WALTER NOWOSAD 1932 - 2015 Walter Nowosad passed away peacefully at the age of 82 with family by his side on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 after battling cancer for five years. Mourning him are Wilma, his wife of 55 years, sons Robert (Lori) and Dennis (Andrea), and his grandchildren Dani and Josh. He is predeceased by his mother (Teresa), father (Otto) and brother (Otto). Walter was born in Wainitz, Znaim, Czechoslovakia (formerly Germany) on March 7, 1932 as the second of two children. His resolve was shaped early in life by the untimely passing of his father when Walter was only six years old and by the displacement of his family from their farm following the war at the age of 13, which led to their relocation to Reichenbuch, Germany. Walter was a keen student, eager to learn about languages, cultures and architecture. He started earning a living as a cabinetmaker, taking great pride in his work and earning his master's designation. Eventually, the hardships of post-war Germany and his strong drive for an architectural education, coupled with new life opportunities, motivated him to seek a fresh start abroad. After boarding the Seven Seas to explore Canada, he landed in Montreal on August 24, 1954 for furtherance to Winnipeg. Over four years in Winnipeg, he made fast friends with fellow immigrants following similar dreams while cabinetmaking by day and earning his architectural degree by night. Walter returned to Germany in 1958 to visit friends and family and met his future wife Wilma. Walter and Wilma began their life in Winnipeg together by building their dream home in St. Andrews and starting their family while Walter worked at a private architectural firm. After 15 years in the private sector, Walter transitioned to the federal government where he worked for 21 years, working on many notable Manitoba facilities, the Deer Lodge hospital and several schools across Manitoba. His portfolio culminated in the Morden Research Station project and his lifeworks earned him the Governor General's Commemorative Medal for significant contributions to compatriots, community and country upon his retirement in 1996. Thank you for being a generous husband, father and Opa to our family, setting a tremendous example for us all. We love you and will forever keep your memory alive. We are eternally thankful to our wonderful neighbours, friends and family for the amazing support they have provided during this difficult time. We'd also like to extend special thanks to Dr. Badasha and the nurses at Victoria General Hospital for their efforts over the past few weeks and Monsignor Comeault and the parishioners at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church for their spiritual guidance. A funeral service will be held for Walter at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 4588 Roblin Blvd. on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. CST. In lieu of flowers, please make all donations payable to the Canadian Cancer Society of Manitoba in Walter's honour. www.seasonsfunerals.ca

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Our condolences to the Nowosad family. We are very sorry to read that Walter has passed away. We are especially sorry to read that Walter suffered from cancer. When we were young in the 1950's we spent a lot of time together in my parents' home. We enjoyed his humor, his friendly ways, and his ambitions to get ahead in life. We visited you once in your lovely home near the Red River. Unfortunately, we have not seen Walter nor his wife for very many years because we moved to Kelowna, BC. - Posted by: Leonhardt and Doris Tonn (Acquaintances) on: Feb 19, 2015
