DONATO PERRETTA It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of beloved husband, father and Nonno, Donato Perretta on February 5, 2015. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Maria (nee Vernucci), daughter Antonietta, son Gianfranco and grandchildren Devano and Selena. Donato also leaves to mourn his siblings Pietro (Rina) Perretta, Maria Pellettieri, Rocco (Rosa) Perretta, Erminia Canosa and sister-in-law, Antonietta (Antonio) Mazza of Pietrapertosa, Italy. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and treasured friends both in Canada and Italy. Donato was predeceased by his loving parents Giovanni Perretta and Antonia Giannotta, and in-laws Francesco and Roccina Vernucci. Donato was born in Castelmezzano, (Potenza) Italy on August 14, 1939 and immigrated to Canada on December 31, 1959. Donato quickly adapted to life in Winnipeg and eventually settled into his role as a Health Care Aide until he retired. Our father was a hardworking man with a large personality who was happiest when he was outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, bocce, gardening, music and wine making - which was second to none. Our father was also happiest when connecting with family and friends both near and far. Later, he enjoyed living and traveling between Kelowna, BC and Winnipeg with his wife and children. As his children, we were blessed to be part of an extended family and close circle of friends who cherished spending time together. Because of his hard work, courage to take risks and overall zest for life, we will forever be grateful for all we have and who we have become. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave., with Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano as the Celebrant. Condolences will be received between 10:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Entombment will follow at Green Acres Garden of Four Apostles Mausoleum. The family would like to thank Dr. N. Hechtenthal for his kindness and care to our husband and father. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Papa, there were no limits when it came to your family and it showed through your unconditional love, every hour of every moment that we shared together as a family. Caro Marito, Papa e Nonno, Riposa in Pace e ti ricordiamo per sempre nella nostra vita. Ti vogliamo un mondo di bene, grazie per tutto che hai fatto per noi. Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • To the Perretta family I offer my heartfelt condolences. Over the years I interacted with Donato Perretta and his family on numerous occasions. Donato was an affable, caring individual who treated everyone with respect and in the spirit of camaraderie. His solid work ethic and steadfast commitment to his family and friends were emblematic of a generation of Italian immigrants who came to this country, seized the opportunities that presented themselves and in some instances created their own in economic and cultural conditions so different than the ones they had left behind. They learned to adapt, integrate and establish their own identities by honing life skills nurtured in Italy yet flexible enough to meet the demands of the Canadian reality. In the process they left a legacy that has contributed enormously to this country's quality of life and that will enrich future generations.
