LORRAINE SLAMA It is with great sadness that we announce, after a courageous battle with cancer, the passing of Lorraine Slama on Monday, February 9, 2015, at the St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 77. Lorraine is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ollie; her brothers Len (Shirley) and Phillip, her sons: Frank (Janet) and Gary (Susan) and grandchildren: Evan, Trevor and Justin. Mom had many passions in her life, especially those that revolved around family, friends, traveling and golf. She was the happiest when she could combine two or more of these passions into a single event. Mom and Dad's numerous trips to Hawaii, Phoenix and Palm Springs were always planned so that golf, warm weather and good friends were the primary focus of their adventure. Most recently, Mom was able to experience a trip to Prague to rekindle Dad's childhood, 65 years after his departure under turbulent times. The friends and family she met on this trip were a frequent topic of conversation. It was a trip that she hoped to experience again. Mom had recently become an ardent Jet's fan and found solace in her last few weeks, watching her team struggle through a losing streak. Many times the nurses in attendance had to wait for a play to finish before they could get close enough to check her vitals. The family would like to acknowledge the kindness and attention that was provided by CancerCare Manitoba and more specifically, the nurses and caregivers of the Palliative Care unit at the St. Boniface Hospital. The respect and sincerity they provided through this difficult time was a blessing. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Wheeler Funeral Home, 1800 Day Street. • Lorraine was my supervisor when I worked at the Winnipeg Free Press on the switchboard. Starting in my high school years on Carlton in the newsroom, to the move on Mountain, she was always there to greet you with a smile. She shared many many stories with me. She spoke with love of her children, grandchildren and of course Ollie, who was always there to pick her up. Lorraine, you are one in a million, and will be missed. - Posted by: Morrie (Donaldson) Somerville (Former Co-Worker) on: Feb 11, 2015

  • It was an honour knowing and being friends with Lorraine, who was always a lady, and had a great sense of humour. We will miss her very much, especially Christmas morning breakfasts, trips to Clear Lake, and much more. The world is a far sadder place without Lorraine in it. May you rest in Peace Lorraine, Love Trina and Ron. - Posted by: Trina & Ron Hamm (Friends) on: Feb 11, 2015
