KAREN A. BODNER With great sadness we announce that, with her family by her side, Karen A. Bodner, (nee McCutcheon) passed away after her fifth battle with cancer, on February 8, 2015 at age 60. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Chris; son, James; parents, Doug and Pauline; brothers Doug (Denise) and Darren; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Raised in West Kildonan and Transcona, Karen travelled to Toronto where she married, had her son and first battle with cancer. Returning to Winnipeg she graduated at age 37 from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce - Honours. However, dance was the passion of her life. Starting at age four with contemporary dance, she continued on and studied ballet, jazz (RWB), tap, Irish (McConnell Irish Dancers), German Folk and finally later in her life, Flamenco. She loved attention and always wanted to be "the star" of every show. With a personality bigger than life, she lit up any room she entered and loved to wear the "bling" to match. In 1994 she married Lt. Col. Chris Bodner, the love of her life. On their wedding day Chris told everyone that Karen would add "colour to his life", and this she truly did. A whole new adventure began as Chris was transferred to the Netherlands where they resided for eight years. She loved the travel, the diplomatic life, and the opportunities to get dressed to the nines to attend balls and banquets. Karen filled her time with charity work, giving dance classes and choreographing NATO multi-national men and women in various performances. Returning to Winnipeg in 2002, Karen continued with her study of Flamenco, enjoying each and every performance. Our sincerest thanks go to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the special care and kindness they showed Karen and her family. Thanks also to the many friends for their support during these trying times. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • Karen and I met when she was attending University. At the time she was a single mom and "determination" was most definitely her middle name! Even if times were tough, nothing was going to get in her way. Of course she graduated with honours. We reconnected a few years ago thanks to our mutual friend Johanne and we just picked up where we left off. She was even more beautiful, radiant and classy, which reflected and spoke to her loves: Chris, her dancing and an adventure-filled life. Although adversity had come knocking on her door more times than most people could handle, Karen was the toughest, most courageous woman I have had the pleasure of knowing. I am proud to call her my friend and know in my heart that she is dancing up a storm. - Posted by: Lise Starkey (Friend) on: Feb 18, 2015

  • At our friend's wedding a couple of years ago, Karen noticed my plain neutral brown/gold sandals that I was wearing with my sea foam green satin dress, pulled out a pair of metallic sea foam green trendy Le Chateau pointy three and half inch pumps from her purse and made me switch my substandard sandals for a more trendy fashionable au couture pair. I didn't do them the same justice as Karen, but I certainly put my heart into dancing the night away because of her. Karen was a stunning soul. With admiration. - Posted by: N@ Gasc (Friend) on: Feb 14, 2015
