GEORGE STANLEY FARWELL George Stanley Farwell was born on April 7, 1930 and died on February 5, 2015. Stan lived in Winnipeg his entire life. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree he went on to graduate from law in 1956 at the University of Manitoba. He was manager of National Trust for several years before returning to practice law as a partner at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman. A few years ago he revealed to his children that he had been C carded by the Toronto Maple Leafs when he played goalie as a teenager - a farm system used by the NHL before 1967. Stan was also a Manitoba junior doubles tennis champion and as an avid golfer he had three holes-in-one - which he always attributed to sheer dumb luck. The first was at Niakwa Country Club, and the next two were exactly 10 years apart at St. Charles Country Club. Stan had a life-long passion for politics and was an active supporter of the Liberal Party of Canada. He was president of the Winnipeg Executives Association, a member of the Fort Garry Rotary Club, a Mason, and served on the Board and Executive of the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society (now The Arthritis Society) during the early 1970s. The family would like to thank the staff at the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre for their great kindness, compassion and care during Stan's final days. At the family's request no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Arthritis Society, Manitoba Division. Stan leaves behind his wife Jean; daughter Barbara of Toronto; son James (Stacey) and grandson George of Vancouver; and sister-in-law Julia Farwell of San Marcos, California. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My sincere condoences on Stan's passing. He was a great guy, a nice man. He was our go-to lawyer on Wills and Estates, always ready and willing to pass on pearls of wisdom. As you know far better than I, he never let arthritis slow him down - I admired his strength, determination and courage. - Posted by: Rick Adams (Former Partner of Stan's at TDS) on: Feb 17, 2015

  • A wonderfully funny man (when I knew him 60 years ago). He and I could get laughing together until I thought I might pass out. I do not envy his loved ones and his dear friends. Their loss is great. - Posted by: Dennis J. Campbell (Old friend, fellow DEKE, classmate at United College, born seven days apart.) on: Feb 17, 2015

  • Sorry to see that Stan had passed away. He surely had a full life. My sincerest sympathy to you, Jean, also Barbara and James. With kindest regards, Lorraine G. - Posted by: Lorraine Gibbs (Friend) on: Feb 15, 2015
