Shirley was born in Winnipeg on January 31, 1942 and attended King Edward and Dufferin Schools, graduating from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. She attended St. Paul's College at the University of Manitoba, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education Degree in 1964. A born educator, Shirley taught for 37 years in various school divisions - Evergreen, Seven Oaks, Winnipeg, Lord Selkirk, Flin Flon and Transcona-Springfield. The areas in which she worked included the Child Guidance Clinic of Winnipeg and the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program. After retiring from teaching, Shirley went on to work in the office for St. Nicholas Parish and Holy Family Cemetery. She was active in a number of parish organizations, especially the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada, where she served as President at the Parish, Regional, Archeparchial and National Levels. She travelled extensively for the league, visiting Ukraine and helping to raise funds for mammogram equipment. She was an active member of the St. Nicholas Apostleship of Prayer and also worked closely with the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate as an Associate Member. Most of all, Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family, especially babysitting her three grandsons. She also cherished spending time at Holy Family Home with her mother, helping her play bingo and listening to music or helping and going on outings with her "second mom" Auntie Olga. She enjoyed travelling, reading and also singing in the parish choir and many other Ukrainian choirs in the city. Shirley will be lovingly missed by her husband Joseph of 43 years; son Mike (Cheryl), grandsons, Joshua, Isaac and Ben; son David (Tamara), mother Josie Field, her aunt Olga Tymchyzn, her aunt Anne Gully, cousin Ron and numerous aunts, uncles and extended family. She was predeceased by her father Frank Field in 2002 and her uncle Joe Tymchyzn in 2003. Parastas will be sung on Sunday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m. and the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, February 23, 10:00 a.m. with Rosary at 9:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave., with a Basilian Father officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Prayer, Glen Eden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's name to Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate Lubov Foundation or a charity of their choice. Thanks to the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital, the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate and Basilian Fathers for all of their help. VICHNAYA PAM'YAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193
