RALPH HENLEY LLOYD September 17, 1921 - February 11, 2015 Ralph Henley Lloyd passed away peacefully on February 11, 2015 at the age of 93 years. He was predeceased by Claire, his loving wife of 65 years. The Lloyd family name was very important to Dad, and he often bemoaned the fact there was no son to carry on the name. However, he was fiercely proud of his three daughters, Diane, Jan and Sandy, so much so that he named the first powerboat he owned the San-D-Jan. Dad was an only child, born in Winnipeg where he lived his entire life. He attended St. John's College, graduating at the outbreak of the Second World War. He enlisted with the RCAF and served overseas as a radar operator. Returning to Winnipeg after the war, he rejoined the Pala Camp, a social group of that era. It was at one of the Friday dances that he met Claire, his wife to be, and they married in 1947. Together they raised their three daughters in Fort Garry. Dad enjoyed many sports, especially tennis, playing with a wicked spin that served him well. His love of the water sports lead him and Mom to build a cottage at West Hawk Lake, where the family spent many wonderful summers together. He taught his daughters to ski on the banks of the Red River with strap on skies and to water ski at West Hawk Lake. While raising his family, Dad worked in the insurance industry ending his career with the Government of Canada as a field officer for the Canada Pension Plan. Education was very important to Dad and he was very insistent his daughters chose a good career path. With his education interrupted by military service, Dad himself enrolled in the business management program at the University of Manitoba later in his career. Dad was very proud of his seven grandchildren and their accomplishments. He also had five great- grandchildren. Dad loved to travel, starting at the age of ten when he sailed to England to visit his grandparents. Dad and Mom had many beautiful trips throughout the world and took pleasure sharing photos of their trips. They often liked to escape Manitoba winters by spending time in Victoria, BC. One of Dad's greatest pleasures was his love of cookies. He would always say he had never eaten a cookie he did not like. It warms our hearts to know that he had eaten his evening snack just prior to slipping away peacefully. He was a private, kind, and honest, gentleman and he will be sadly missed by all of us. A private family memorial will be held at West Hawk Lake this summer, with a memorial bench to be placed on the Trans Canada trail in memory of both Ralph and Claire.
