SHIRLEY GRACE BETTS
Born: Jan 03, 1932
Date of Passing: Mar 18, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY GRACE BETTS Peacefully on the evening of March 18, 2015, with family by her side, our loving mother Shirley left us. She is reunited with her beloved husband Gord, son Randy, and brother Arnie, leaving an empty space in the lives of her family. Left to cherish her memory are her brother Ron (Penny); sister-in-law Audrey (Arnie); children Nancy (Marc), Jeff (Karen), Ken, and Chris; daughter-in-law Jo; grandchildren Ashley (Kelly), Stephen, Colin, Jason, and Ethan, several nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends who will share in memories of her smile, her laugh and her wit. On January 3, 1932, in Verdun, QC, mom came into this world, the first of three children born to Emily and Albert Perrett. It was in Verdun, while attending school, that Mom met Gord, the love of her life. In 1954, the pair married and would spend the next 44 years together. By 1972 when they established their home in Winnipeg, after a brief time in Saskatoon, the family had grown by five. It was here that Mom took a brand new house and turned it into a loving home where anyone was always welcome. After settling in Winnipeg Mom began selling Avon and joined a bridge club, through which she met some very dear friends. In her youth Mom participated in hockey, basketball, bowling and other sports, a love which she passed down to her children, whose games she enjoyed watching. Mom had many interests, often doing several at once - from crosswords to jigsaw puzzles, reading to embroidery. She was never without a project on the go: sewing clothing and Halloween costumes; knitting treasured afghans, sweaters, and toques. She would often go out of her way to create or find patterns that reflected our various likes, personalities, and interests. Even with all this on the go and working at Eatons she always found time to get out and enjoy a night or two of Bingo. Mom had many roles and jobs throughout her life, but the most important and satisfying to her was creating a warm and loving home for her husband and their children. Mom was never happier than when everyone was together telling stories, pulling pranks, and laughing. Rest peacefully mom. Know that you are loved and missed. In keeping with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. I am sorry to hear of Shirley's passing. I was just talking with Aunt Doreen (Alcock) on the phone to wish her a happy birthday and she told me what had happened. I think that the last time I saw Gord, and Shirley was when we lived in Hamilton in 1965. After that we headed east to Saint John NB. If you would like to, please contact me. - Posted by: Bill Stroud (Nephew) on: Apr 09, 2015

Warm memories from an early age when the entire family lived in Verdun and Shirley would happily take me with her to the store for an ice cream cone or a bag of jelly beans. She will be missed by all her knew her. - Posted by: Barbara Belise (cousin) on: Mar 26, 2015

Aunt Shirley...Smiles, warmth, pranks, dedication, creative, devotion, patience, laughter, love, did I say pranks?...these are just a few of the words that could describe the magic that you brought to everyone that your life touched. I'm so blessed to have been a small part of that. I've always held you close to my heart and I always will. I shall miss chatting and giggling with you, but more than anything, I will miss your warm hugs. I know you will keep the laughter going, you always have. I have many fond memories of Mrs Betts. I remember her always baking something and inviting several neighborhood kids over to enjoy it. She was a lovely woman. - Posted by: Michelle Crilly (family friend) on: Mar 24, 2015

Sad news! We send our deepest condolences and even though we live thousands of miles away (in Shropshire, UK), we have often thought of our family spread around the world. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers on Thursday. God bless you and bring you his peace and comfort. love Don and Yvonne - Posted by: The Reverend Don and Yvonne Alcock (Nephew) on: Mar 24, 2015
