(DOROTHY) EVELYN REID It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful Mom, Nana and Great- Nana on the afternoon of March 30, 2015. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon; sister and brother-in-law Gwen and Harold Prout; and parents and infant brother Alexander. She is survived by her children Larry and wife Laurel; Debbie and husband Randy; grandchildren Lisa (Joel), Stephen (Carissa), Mark (Beth) and Brooke (Justin); and great-grandchildren Grace, Quinn and Paige Evelyn (her namesake). Mom was born on February 16, 1920 in Edmonton and grew up on a farm in the village of Strome, Alberta. She lived there until her dad moved them to live with his family in Alexandria, Ontario after the untimely death of her mom in 1935. This was a big change, but she made many friends. It was here that she saw her dream come true of becoming a telephone operator which she was immensely proud of. She worked her way up to Chief Operator and implemented a "coffee break" for the girls on their shift, which they had never experienced before. A New Year's party in 1953 would change Mom's life forever. The handsome young photographer that was hired to take pictures that night took one look at Mom and said "I'm going to marry that girl" - and he did. On May 16, 1953 she became Mrs. Gordon Reid. They started their family the following year and then moved to Winnipeg where dad was from. Mom got on with MTS and they settled on Jessie Avenue where they raised the family. Unfortunately, due to Dad's poor health, they were only married for 21 years until his passing in 1974. Mom continued working until her well-deserved retirement at age 60. She worked hard all her life and never complained. She would always say "the good Lord never gives you more than you can handle, but sometimes I think he's cutting it a little close". Her faith gave her strength and comfort. Life became easier and she was able to do some travelling which she enjoyed. Mom moved to Lion's Place where she spent a very happy 26 years. She loved bingo, playing cards and going downtown. The grandchildren have many happy memories of spending time with Nana at her suite (especially Jenga). Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and resided at Lion's Manor in personal care for the past four years. We would like to thank the staff there for their truly amazing care and compassion. Mom could not have been in a better place. It is like a family there. She left there with dignity and respect. A very special thank you to the Alwis family for their love and support of Mom over the years and to Jill Glover and Marion Menzies for being there. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Pastor Jerry South officiating. We have all been blessed with Mom's unconditional love, support, extreme generosity and life's lessons - too many to mention that she has passed on to us. She was a wonderful wife and mother under some very difficult circumstances and we are truly grateful for this. Dad picked the right girl at the party that night. Safe journey Mom, you will live on in all of us. Rascal rabbit! THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • My dear Debbie, Randy, Larry, Laurel and families, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom, Nana and great-Nana. Her loss will leave a deep void in all of your lives, however, the wonderful memories you all hold will help you with the upcoming days. She was a beautiful person both inside and out. Her generous, kind nature and work ethic have been passed on to you Debbie and Larry. I have fond memories of lunches at her suite and her birthday parties with Gwen and Harold. She was a perfect host just as you are Debbie. - Posted by: Marion Menzies (Friend) on: Apr 04, 2015

  • Growing up on Jessie Avenue, my family was friends with the Reid family. One year, we had a Halloween costume party. Most of the guests had arrived by the time this mute, masked, mysterious woman showed up at the front door. She wouldn't speak, but mingled and maintained her hidden identity for the longest time. For this little boy, who grew up to be a professional actor, it was a lesson in characterization and miming that made a profound impression. When Evelyn finally removed her mask after a few hours I was not alone in my admiration for her "trickery" which was such a "treat" that Halloween night! - Posted by: Jon Ted Wynne (friend) on: Apr 03, 2015

  • I worked with Evelyn for a short time up to her retirement. She was a wonderful soft spoken lady, always upbeat and was a hard worker. Thanks for the few short years I knew Evelyn, R.I.P until we meet again. - Posted by: Margaret Ralph (MTS Co worker ) on: Apr 03, 2015

  • My best memories of Evelyn are decades ago when Debbie and I worked together and then when she lived next door to my Mom at Lions Place. Evelyn had such a great sense of humor. • My deepest sympathies to the Gandpre and Reid family. I'm sad to hear of your dear mother/grandmother passing away. I will always remember her kindness and loving nature towards me and my children when we got together for tea. I have kept the little blue knitted dress she made for my daughter. May happy memories carry you through this sorrowful time. - Posted by: Emira Acquisto (neighbor) on: Apr 02, 2015

  • Debbie, Randy & extended family, Please accept our warm hearted condolences with the loss of your Mom. Many wonderful memories will stay with us as we remember her warm, friendly and incredible beautiful spirit. Ever grateful are we to have the pleasure of sharing in the celebration of her 95th birthday most recently. Her caring ways, love of people and generous heart live on in you Debbie, as does the playfulness of Nan's ability to liven up a room and make people laugh. We couldn't be more blessed to be part of such a loving and kind family. With love, Emil & Cheryl Norberg (Carissa's parents) - Posted by: Emil & Cheryl Norberg (Friends ) on: Apr 02, 2015
