DONALD PATEMAN SMITH
Born: Feb 17, 1927
Date of Passing: Apr 06, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD PATEMAN SMITH February 17, 1927 - April 6, 2015 After a prolonged battle with cancer, Don passed away and is now peaceful and without pain. He took his last breath with Bev holding his hand, just the two of them, as it was almost 60 years ago. Against all odds, they have left a living legacy of eight children and ten grandchildren. Don leaves to cherish his memory his wife Bev and his children Ellen/Gerry (Steven, Scott); Robert; Gord/Cindy (Scott, Deseree, Troy); David/Brenda (Jerrett, Ricky); Marica (Jessica, Jeffery, Aimee); and Gwen. He also leaves his sister Gwen and Lee Collett; Bev's sisters Sandy and Gwen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his children Nancy Ann and Richard Cameron; and his parents Paulie and Gordon Smith. Don was born in Winnipeg while his parents were living and working in La Riviere, MB. His father worked as an operator/station agent for the C.P.R, and Don therefore spent his early years moving from one town to the next. He was a child of the Depression and his father was often unemployed. The family lived in Vancouver, BC and McCauley, MB until his dad found a fulltime position and they moved to what Don called bush country, known to others as Northwestern Ontario. Don's schooling was inter-provincial and intermittent with his high school in Fort William, ON. At that time, he became an employee of the C.P.R. and was a crew caller. He subsequently went to Winnipeg and trained as an operator/station agent and began his prairie journey. Don met Bev while she was attending Normal School in Winnipeg and they were married in August 1955. The next 30 years involved having and raising a family of eight, living 17 years in three different communities in Saskatchewan, being involved in community activities, singing in choirs, golfing, hunting, curling and camping with the family. When the station agent positions became redundant, the family moved to Minnedosa, MB and then Altona, MB until Don retired at the age of 59. The final move to Winnipeg happened in 1986, and Don enjoyed a long and pleasant retirement that included summers at the lake and winters in the Okanagan. He continued to enjoy his love of gardening, golf, curing and the pleasures of a few beers, and he always had time for his 10 grandchildren. A service to celebrate Don's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Green Acres Funeral Home, #1 Highway East at Navin Road. The family would like to thank Dr. MacMahan and Debbie and the Urology staff at St. Boniface Hospital. Special thanks as well to the staff at the Grace Hospice for their exceptional nursing staff and caring attitude. For those who wish to make a donation in Don's memory, the family has chosen the Grace Hospital Foundation (Hospice), 300 Booth Drive Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 3M7, the Hospice is an excellent facility and has an incredible staff. Bev & family ...Our deepest sympathy to all of you!! We have known Don for a lot of years and will miss him at the lake!! We especially will miss his wit and his one liners. I can still see him coming down your many steps with his sling shot ready to meet up with Mr. Bear. We were well protected. No worries!!! My remembrance of Don is of a caring, loving individual who had time for one and all whenever one would drop in at their home. Loved visiting both Don and Bev at the lake especially - they were both relaxed, enjoying nature! Don was always happy gardening - proud of his abundant crops. Will miss his cheerful smile. Condolences to Bev and the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. R.I.P. Don! - Posted by: Suzanne Braun (Friend) on: Apr 09, 2015

My most sincere condolences to Bev and her family at this sad time. I have been fortunate to have worked with Bev on two reunion committees of the Provincial Normal School Class of '54-'55. I knew of her the year we spent at the school and it has been such fun to meet up again. I did not know Don but enjoyed Bev's stories about the "railroad years", raising a family, and the happy years wintering in B.C. I know that this family will find great comfort in all the happy times and the memories made over those years. Thinking of you, Bev, as you grieve your loss. Sincerely, Shirley Augustine - Posted by: Shirley Augustine ( Former Normal School attendee of Bev) on: Apr 09, 2015
