VERNON (VERN) LAWRENCE SMITH Vernon (Vern) Lawrence Smith passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at West Park Manor, at the age of 87, with his family at his side. Vern is survived by his wife Betty, his children Rick (Simone) and Nancy (Joel), grandchildren Stephen, Lyndsay, Kristian, Hayley and Ian, and his brother Bill (Gladys) of Calgary. He was predeceased by his brothers Dan and Jim. Vern was born in Winnipeg, attended Kelvin High School and began his long working life with the C.P.R. at Portage and Main, transferring to Canadian Pacific Airlines in 1960. He later worked in the travel industry until his retirement in 2007. Vern and Betty had the good fortune of flying throughout the world; from the Caribbean, United Kingdom, Europe and North Africa to Asia and the South Pacific. He once had the dubious pleasure of being on board a run-away camel that travelled, for some unknown reason, the length of the Great Pyramid of Giza. This clearly marked the end of his camel riding adventures. Vern was a Mason, as well as a longtime member of the Lions Club and Skal Club. Funeral services and reception will be held at St. Georges Anglican Church, 168 Wilton Ave. and Grosvenor, Monday, April 20, at 11:00 a.m. with The Reverend Simon Blaikie officiating. Interment to follow at Thomson "In the Park" Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at West Park Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dad's favourite charity, the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Dear Betty & family, I was so saddened to read of Vern's passing. I remember you both with fond admiration. As a young kid I would visit with you in the red brick house on Merriam Blvd. and then I would walk over the bridge to your apartment. You were always so kind and good to me. My prayers are with you all. Take care, Love Yvonne. - Posted by: Yvonne Josephson (Old friend) on: Apr 22, 2015

  • Betty, my heart and my prayers go out to you and your family at this sad time. I don't know if you remember me or not, but you and I were on the first Chemo Savvy team that was established in Winnipeg. We had our picture taken together because you were the eldest member and I was the youngest member. The experiences you shared touched my heart, and I just want you to know that I'm thinking and praying for you and your family. • Betty, Nancy and Rick and families, David and I are deeply sorry for your loss. I [Susan] have known your family since you [Nancy] and Deb were little girls and David has known your parents since our marriage. Vern was a true "gentle"man, kind, caring and so much fun. We enjoyed the several times they spent with us at Catastrophe Lake after a German Wine Society wind up party. We had so many laughs as Betty and Vern regaled us with many stories. May God grant you the blessing of his peace knowing that Vern is at rest. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. • Our family has a long history with Uncle Vern and Auntie Betty along with the rest of the Smith family, dating back to my late Dad Russell and his friendship with Vern's brother Dan at Kelvin. I have many memories of the times we shared. Our family would like to extend our deepest condolences to Betty, Rick, Nancy and their families. - Posted by: Cathy Kelly (Eaton) (God-daughter/family friend ) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • So saddened to hear of your dad's passing. Your dad and mom hold a very special place in my heart and always will. They greeted me with open arms when I came to live with you for awhile many years ago. I remember your dad's keen sense of humour and he was always someone you wanted to spend time with. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Pat Armstrong (Niece) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • The members of Skal International Winnipeg would like to express our deepest sympathies and prayers for Betty and the Smith Family. Vern was a well respected and loved member of the Skal Winnipeg Club. He was a long term member dating back to the 1980s and never missed a meeting if he was in town. He loved socializing and working together in a group to support various undertakings. Betty and Vern are special people with hearts of gold and Vern will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. - Posted by: Winnipeg Skal Club, per Loretta Clarke (Club Member) on: Apr 18, 2015

  • Ahhhhhhh, so sad to hear of your Dad's passing Nancy and Rick. I have such fond memories of the "Smiffs" and the Wheelers get togethers, whether a Chinese dinner in Fort Garry or lakeside Victoria Beach. Always lots of laughter. Your dad was such a kind man, with an easy soul and a quick smile to share and I remember a passion for planes. Mrs Smiff, as a "wee one", I was always told of Vern's and your monster travel adventures....such fun! I am sorry for your loss Betty.
