KATHLEEN CLAIRE MURPHY
Born: May 28, 1949
Date of Passing: Mar 30, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKATHLEEN (KATE) CLAIRE MURPHY On the morning of March 30, 2015, Kate passed away at Pinawa Hospital in Pinawa, MB after a lengthy illness. Kate was 65 years old. Kathleen Murphy was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on May 28, 1949. She was the first child of Winnifred "Peggy" Florence (nee Coyston) and Claude Howard Murphy. Kathleen was an inquisitive, outgoing and sociable little girl growing up in a world of accelerating change after the Second World War. Two sisters and a brother soon followed and Kathy was the natural leader of this gang of four. Another brother followed later, completing the set of five. The three sisters attended, and found a home at, the Convent of the Sacred Heart, where they were able to grow spiritually, intellectually and artistically. Mother Elizabeth Murphy's Glee Club planted a seed in Kathy's mind as she led the girls from the classical and spiritual repertoire of the Convent choir into the 1960s folk rock scene and then into a professional career with a band called Sugar n' Spice. The three young ladies played across Canada and the U.S. and had a wonderful time and some measure of success. Kate was always known to have great intellectual potential as well as being a gifted singer. Her lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer was realized at York University's Osgoode Hall Law School in 1981, followed by her articles at the Ontario Attorney General's office. She was admitted to the Ontario Bar Association on April 7, 1983 and became a partner at Toronto's Houser, Henry, Loudon and Syron in February, 1990. It was while Kate was pursuing her law career in Ontario that she met her husband, a forester named Michael Waldram. They were married in Toronto on October 9, 1987. Kate returned to Manitoba with Mike where she became a partner at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP and Mike managed the Manitoba Model Forest at Pine Falls, MB. Together they made important contributions regarding resource management and aboriginal affairs, some of which have impact on our society to this day. Kate was appointed to the Manitoba Law Reform Commission in May, 2000 and received her Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall in 2005. Kate never fully recovered from the death of her beloved Mike in 2006. Kate was preceded in death by her mother Peggy Murphy; husband Michael Waldram, and brother-in-law Gerry Leger. Kate is survived by her father Dr. Claude Murphy; sisters Maureen (Gerry) and Aileen (Greg); brothers Robert (Anne) and Paul (Barbara); brother-in-law Jim Waldram (Pam); nephews Sean (Robert) and Brady (Aileen); nieces Brittany (Paul), Kaitlin (Jim) and Amara (Jim), as well as her great-niece Laura (Brady and Aleesha). A Celebration of Life will be held for Kate on May 28, 2015 at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, 269 Jemima St. in Selkirk, MB at 2:00 p.m. Kate's dear friend Father Robbie McDougall will be the celebrant. Those who are able to attend are asked to confirm at celebration@mvscs.com. Interment will follow alongside her late husband at St. Margaret's Cemetery in Lockport, MB. Our family wishes to thank the caring nurses, staff and Dr. Bruneau at Pinawa Hospital for their warmth and compassion. We also wish to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Rick Lindenschmidt, Kelly and Denise at the Selkirk Medical Centre, Vanessa, Sharon and Diana at Interlake South Health Authority Home Care and Lila, Kate's housekeeper who became a friend to Kate in a very short time. Great thanks are also due to Kate's sister Maureen and her aunt Lynne for their special care and attention to Kate over the last years. Dear Aileen and Murphy family, It seems so long ago that Kate and Aileen entered the very heart of our family in the very heart of Toronto. You were both "cutting it big" and we had such huge admiration for you both! Kate made all the right decisions in following her heart as did Aileen. We are so sorry to read this news and send you our sincerest condolences. Birthe Jorgensen and David Baker. - Posted by: Birthe Jorgensen and David Baker (Landlords) on: Mar 14, 2017

It is with great sadness that I heard of Kathleen's passing. As a high school chum, I have such fond memories of her and her family as we vacationed together at Falcon Lake, she traveled with us to Wivenhoe for the eclipse of the sun and she and her sisters sang at my wedding 48 years ago. What a talented lady! Please accept sincere sympathy for your incredible loss on behalf of my self and the whole Scatliff family. With hugs and Blessings to all, Susan (Scatliff) Calder-Heaps - Posted by: Susan Calder Heaps (high school friendship/family friends) on: May 16, 2015

We were so saddened to hear of Kathy's passing. She will be missed by all who had the privilege to have known her and her beautiful singing voice - a talent and a gift that she so generously gave and shared. Heaven will be blessed to have an added voice to the angels' choir. Our hearfelt sympanthies to her Dad and family, who will miss her dearly. - Posted by: Curt and Anita Wold (friend of the family) on: Apr 30, 2015

My sincere condolences to Aileen and Maureen, as well as the whole family. As we grow older, we seem to spend as much time looking back as we do forward. When I'm reminded of my Convent days, I remember Aileen's big sister as a senior student who was never unkind to us younger ones. We share moments in life and looking back at time spent with Kathleen, those moments were always nice ones. - Posted by: Annette Schaible Pfaffinger (Sacred Heart graduate ) on: Apr 27, 2015

I remember the beautiful Murphy sisters at Sacred Heart Convent. Kathy had a gorgeous smile and an equally gorgeous voice. My fondest memory is watching the three sisters perform "Bridge Over..." as the Sugar'n Spice Band. My sympathy to all the family for this very sad loss. To you Kate, and all of your family! On behalf of the many parishes & schools within our community (present & past alumni),.. and St Marys Academy, St Boniface, St Pauls and especially those of the Sacred Heart Convent, please accept not only our prayers & condolences upon Kate's passing, but our sincere thanks & appreciation for having lived with her amongst us! Kate, Maureen, & Aileen...aka (the sweet SUGAR!)..." The Murphy Sisters!" ...with their Angelic voices, were seemingly claimed as "OUR GIRLS!" within the mix of the best of times, music of the 60's & 70's. And no daughters could have had a better Mom, with Peggy often accompanying the girls on those arduous road trips in those early years!~ And on a selfish note, it was something so very special...for us boys at St Pauls High, to have the girls of the Sacred Heart...'grace' our hallways from time to time, for chem & physics classes(and yes...our dances too!) I guess MOTHER ELIZABETH did some heavy lobbying to have KATE now join The HEAVENLY CHOIR! Deservedly so! Singing forever more...without having to go on tour!~ With the utmost of respect, love, & prayers for Kate, and all within the Murphy Family...from our appreciative Robertson Clan, with all 10 brothers & 6 sisters still alive, we thank all...for the many many special memories, once given...and still kept alive within! Blessings upon all! John Robertson A proud St Pauls Alum! - Posted by: john robertson (Christian Community) on: Apr 25, 2015
